- Ἰαω (IAO) appears in Greek transliterations of the Hebrew Tetragrammaton (YHWH), especially in Hellenistic and Gnostic texts.
- It was revered as a name of supreme divine power—the manifest god, often standing for the solar creative Logos.
- In Sethian Gnostic cosmology, IAO is one of the archons, sometimes ambiguously portrayed as both divine and demiurgic.
- It may also be derived from the Aramaic יהו (YHW)—a variant of the sacred name of God, YHWH.
IAO Formula: A Gnostic and Thelemic magical formula representing the cycle of creation, preservation, and dissolution.
- I (Isis) – Birth, initiation, the Virgin. The beginning of the process
- A (Apophis) – Death, destruction, dissolution. The ordeal and crucifixion.
- O (Osiris) – Resurrection, union, transfiguration. The return and new life.
Birth → Death → Rebirth
IAO is the formula of the magician who seeks to unite himself with Godhead through a process of death and resurrection.” - Aleister Crowley, Magick in Theory and Practice
Crowley connects IAO with Tiphereth, the sphere of the Sun on the Tree of Life—the place of Christic sacrifice and resurrection.
In Thelema, Crowley later expands the formula to I.A.O. = L.V.X. (Light) and even IAO SABAO, integrating it into longer invocations.
IAO in the Golden Dawn
In Golden Dawn rituals, IAO is often vibrated or intoned to:
- Invoke solar or divine power
- Consecrate tools or space
- Mark transformation in initiation rites
The vibration of the word itself is said to cause resonance in the subtle body and open the magician to solar and divine forces.
AO and the Vowels of God
Some traditions equate IAO with the pure vowel sounds—the primal utterance, the language of the Divine.
- I-A-O as a trinity of vowels (like AUM in Vedanta) is considered a vibrational sonic key to divine reality.
- The mystic sound current—nāda in Indian mysticism—has its parallel in IAO, the Word of God.
IAO
“Hebrews say that Jehovah is the sacred name of God. Some initiates said the God of Moses was IAO, and had only three letters. These three letters are the manifest God.” Iod = I Hei = A Vav = O He = e
pronounced “Eeeaauu(h)ee”
Literally the vowel sounds? God is the combination of all the vowels sounds the mouth makes.
Same idea as AUM
IAO is from “e” sound to “ah” sound AUM is from “ah sound to “e” sound
Eeeeaaaaoooooouuuuuu(mmmmm) Aaaaaahhhoooooouuuuuuuummmmmmmmm(eeeeee)
- Iod (I): The first letter symbolizes the spark of divine existence, the initiation of creation, the beginning of all things, representing the masculine aspect or the divine will.
- Hei (A): The second letter symbolizes the expansion or creation of the divine will, the feminine principle, and the manifestation of the divine in the world. A is associated with birth and becoming.
- Vav (O): The third letter, representing completion and wholeness, is the circular unity and return to the source, where the divine essence is reunified and transcendent. It is the divine connection of the male and female principles, where spiritual ascent is achieved.
Ἰαω
From Aramaic יהו (“YHW”), related to Biblical Hebrew יהוה (YHWH). In written use by Hellenistic Jews in the Septuagint before the Christian era, when it became standard to substitute Κύριος (Kúrios, “Lord”).
In Sethian Gnosticism, Yao or Iao (Ἰαω) is an archon.[1] In On the Origin of the World, he is one of the three sons of Yaldabaoth, with the other two being Astaphaios and Eloai. In the Apocryphon of John, he is the fourth of the seven archons.
