The Apocalypse: A Chronicle of the End Times
This narrative, woven from the prophetic scriptures of the Christian Bible, unfolds the story of how this age concludes and the age to come begins.
The vivid imagery of Christian eschatology, particularly in the Book of Revelation, is not intended for literal interpretation. Instead, its truth and meaning resonate as symbolic, metaphorical, and mythical expressions. The sayings of Jesus and the events described in eschatological texts point to a profound spiritual awakening—a moment beyond time when the human soul emerges from its slumber and recognizes its true essence as the Son of God. The Second Coming symbolizes the dawning of Christ Consciousness within the individual and across humanity as a whole.
The elements of Christian eschatology—its visions, prophecies, and narratives—are to be understood as a symbolic and mythical journey of the soul and psyche. In this exploration, we shall elucidate the inner, esoteric significance of the major events and narrative threads of Christian eschatology, revealing their deeper spiritual meaning.
Chronological Events in the Book of Revelation
- The Great Apostasy: A widespread falling away from the true faith occurs within the church, signaling the approach of the end times as people embrace false doctrines and reject biblical truth.

I. The Present Age: Signs and Warnings
The Expectation of Christ's Return
Before his ascension, Jesus made a promise to his disciples:
"Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, 'Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.'" [Acts 1:9–11]
But this return will not come at an expected hour. Jesus himself warned:
"Of that day and hour no-one knows; no, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be." [Matthew 24:36–39]
The Manner of His Coming
When Christ returns, it will be unmistakable:
"For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be." [Matthew 24:27]
"Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory." [Matthew 24:30]
"And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other." [Matthew 24:31]
Additional Signs of the Times
Jesus provided further warnings about the deceptions and cosmic upheavals preceding the end, emphasizing vigilance and endurance for his followers.
"And then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand." [Mark 13:21–23]
"But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken." [Mark 13:24–25]
"Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." [Luke 21:28]
These signs reinforce the tribulation's intensity, calling believers to discernment amid false messiahs and celestial portents.
Parables of the End
Through parables, Jesus illustrated the suddenness of his return and the need for readiness, likening it to unexpected events in daily life.
"But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect." [Luke 12:39–40]
"Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’" [Matthew 25:1–6]
"It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning—lest he come suddenly and find you asleep." [Mark 13:34–36]
These stories urge preparedness, portraying the second coming as unforeseen, separating the watchful from the unprepared.
Apocryphal Sayings on the End Times
From non-canonical texts like the Gospel of Thomas, attributed sayings of Jesus offer additional allusions to cosmic dissolution and the realized eschaton, echoing themes of apocalypse and renewal.
"Jesus said, 'This heaven will pass away, and the one above it will pass away. The dead are not alive, and the living will not die. In the days when you consumed what is dead, you made it what is alive. When you come to dwell in the light, what will you do? On the day when you were one you became two. But when you become two, what will you do?'" [Gospel of Thomas 11]
"His disciples said to him, 'When will the repose of the dead come about, and when will the new world come?' He said to them, 'What you look forward to has already come, but you do not recognize it.'" [Gospel of Thomas 51]
"Jesus said, 'The heavens and the earth will be rolled up in your presence. And the one who lives from the living one will not see death.' Does not Jesus say, 'Whoever finds himself is superior to the world?'" [Gospel of Thomas 111]
II. The Great Tribulation
A Time of Unparalleled Suffering
Before the end comes, the world will pass through a period of tribulation unlike any in history. Jesus prophesied:
"There will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever will be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake, those days will be shortened." [Matthew 24:21–22]
The Abomination of Desolation
A pivotal moment in this tribulation will be the appearance of what Daniel prophesied and Jesus confirmed:
"So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains." [Matthew 24:15–16]
The prophet Daniel had written:
"The people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it will be with a flood, and till the end of the war, desolations are determined. Then he will confirm a covenant with many for one week. But in the middle of the week, he will bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations will be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation which is determined is poured out on the desolate." [Daniel 9:26–27]
Paul further describes this figure who will set himself up as God:
"Let no-one deceive you by any means, for that day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God." [2 Thessalonians 2:3–4]
False Christs and Deception
During this time of tribulation, deception will abound:
"For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect." [Matthew 24:21, 24]
John's vision in Revelation warns:
"For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty." [Revelation 16:14]
Even Satan himself will masquerade:
"For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works." [2 Corinthians 11:13–15]
IIa. The Seals of Judgment
As the Lamb opens the scroll in heaven, a series of divine judgments are unleashed upon the earth, marking the beginning of sorrows:
"And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer." [Revelation 6:1-2]
"And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword." [Revelation 6:3-4]
"And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine." [Revelation 6:5-6]
"And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth." [Revelation 6:7-8]
"And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?" [Revelation 6:9-10]
"And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind." [Revelation 6:12-13]
These seals unleash conquest, war, famine, death, martyrdom, and cosmic upheaval, fulfilling Jesus' warnings of birth pains before the end.
IIb. The Sealing of the Faithful
Amid the unfolding judgments, God protects His people:
"And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel." [Revelation 7:1-4]
A great multitude emerges victorious from the tribulation:
"After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands... And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." [Revelation 7:9, 13-14]
IIc. The Trumpet Judgments
The seventh seal introduces seven trumpets, heralding further woes:
"And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour. And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets." [Revelation 8:1-2]
The fifth trumpet releases tormenting locusts:
"And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power." [Revelation 9:1-3]
The sixth unleashes a vast army:
"And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them." [Revelation 9:13-16]
These trumpets bring hail, fire, darkened skies, poisoned waters, and massive death, intensifying the tribulation's woes.
IId. The Cosmic War
A heavenly conflict erupts:
"And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." [Revelation 12:7-9]
The dragon pursues a woman and her child:
"And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born." [Revelation 12:1-4]
This war reveals Satan's defeat in heaven, casting him to earth to wage war on the faithful.
IIe. The Beasts and the Mark
From the sea rises a beast:
"And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy... And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?" [Revelation 13:1, 4]
Another beast from the earth enforces worship:
"And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast... And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men." [Revelation 13:11-13]
It imposes a mark:
"And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six." [Revelation 13:16-18]
These beasts represent tyrannical powers demanding allegiance, deceiving with miracles and enforcing economic control through the infamous mark.
IIf. The Bowl Judgments
Seven angels pour out final plagues:
"And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth. And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image." [Revelation 16:1-2]
The plagues bring sores, seas of blood, scorched heat, darkness, and the drying of the Euphrates, preparing for the kings' gathering at Armageddon:
"And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared... For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty... And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon." [Revelation 16:12, 14, 16]
These bowls complete God's wrath on the unrepentant world.
IIg. The Fall of Mystery Babylon
An angel reveals the judgment of the great harlot:
"And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH." [Revelation 17:1-5]
Her destruction comes suddenly:
"Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her... And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning." [Revelation 18:8-9]
Babylon, the symbol of worldly corruption and idolatry, falls, eliciting laments from merchants and kings who profited from her luxuries.
IIh. The Two Witnesses
During the tribulation, God raises up two prophetic witnesses to testify against the world:
"And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will." [Revelation 11:3-6]
They are martyred but vindicated:
"And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified... And after three days and an half the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them." [Revelation 11:7-8, 11-12]
These witnesses, echoing Moses and Elijah, proclaim truth amid deception, their resurrection signaling God's power over death.
III. The Rapture and Resurrection
The Dead in Christ Rise First
At the appointed moment, Christ will call his people to himself:
"For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first." [1 Thessalonians 4:16]
Paul describes this resurrection in more detail:
"We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." [1 Corinthians 15:51–52]
The Living Are Caught Up
Immediately following the resurrection of the dead:
"Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord." [1 Thessalonians 4:17]
This gathering has been promised from ancient times. Daniel prophesied:
"Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt." [Daniel 12:2]
And Isaiah declared:
"Your dead will live. Together with my dead body, they will arise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust, for your dew is like the dew of herbs, and the earth will cast out the dead." [Isaiah 26:19]
The Nature of the Resurrection Body
The resurrection body will be transformed, as Jesus explained:
"In the resurrection, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like the angels of God in heaven." [Matthew 22:30]
Paul elaborates:
"So also is the resurrection of the dead: the body... is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body." [1 Corinthians 15:42–44]
IIIa. The 144,000 Sealed
Before the rapture's full unfolding, a special group is marked for protection and service:
"And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel... These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb." [Revelation 7:4; 14:4]
They stand on Mount Zion with the Lamb, singing a new song:
"And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: And they sung as it were a new song before the throne." [Revelation 14:1-3]
Representing Israel's remnant or the church's pure vanguard, they evangelize during tribulation, sealed against harm as firstfruits of redemption.
IV. The Marriage of the Lamb
The Bride Makes Herself Ready
After meeting Christ in the air, a great celebration occurs in heaven—the marriage of the Lamb:
"Let us be glad and rejoice and give him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his wife has made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints." [Revelation 19:7–8]
This marriage involves a great multitude celebrating:
"And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, 'Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!'" [Revelation 19:6]
V. The Second Coming in Glory
Christ Returns as Conquering King
After the marriage celebration, Christ returns to earth not as a suffering servant, but as a victorious king:
"Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God." [Revelation 19:11–13]
The Armies of Heaven Follow
"And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God." [Revelation 19:14–15]
VI. The Battle of Armageddon
The Kings of Earth Gather for War
The armies of the world, deceived by the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet, gather for a final confrontation:
"And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty... And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon." [Revelation 16:13–14, 16]
The Swift Defeat of God's Enemies
But this massive army is no match for the returning King:
"And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse." [Revelation 19:19–21]
VIa. The Harvest of the Earth
Before Armageddon's climax, a dual harvest reaps the earth:
"And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle. And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe." [Revelation 14:14-15, 18]
The righteous are gathered like wheat:
"And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe." [Revelation 14:15]
While the wicked face wrath:
"And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs." [Revelation 14:19-20]
This harvest separates saints from sinners, fulfilling Joel's prophecy: "Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great." (Joel 3:13).
VII. The Millennial Reign
Satan Bound for a Thousand Years
With the enemies of God defeated, an angel descends to deal with the ancient serpent:
"Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain. And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, that he should deceive the nations no more, until the thousand years were ended." [Revelation 20:1–3]
The Saints Reign with Christ
During this millennium, those who were faithful unto death are given authority:
"Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom judgment was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony to Jesus and for the word of God, and who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years." [Revelation 20:4]
This is called the first resurrection:
"Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such, the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and will reign with him a thousand years." [Revelation 20:6]
VIII. Satan's Final Rebellion
The Dragon Released
At the end of the thousand years, Satan is released for one last attempt to deceive the nations:
"When the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea." [Revelation 20:7–8]
Ezekiel had prophesied of this final battle:
"Set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him... You will ascend, coming like a storm, covering the land like a cloud, you and all your troops and many peoples with you." [Ezekiel 38:2, 9]
Swift Divine Judgment
But this vast army meets sudden and complete destruction:
"They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them." [Revelation 20:9]
God had declared through Ezekiel:
"I will bring him to judgment with pestilence and bloodshed. I will rain down on him and on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him: flooding rain, great hailstones, fire and brimstone." [Ezekiel 38:22]
The Final Fate of the Devil
"The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever." [Revelation 20:10]
VIIIa. Gog and Magog's Deeper Roots
The final rebellion ties to ancient prophecies:
"And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates, To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land." [Ezekiel 38:11-12]
God's response is total:
"Thus saith the Lord God; Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by my servants the prophets of Israel, which prophesied in those days many years that I would bring thee against them? And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord God, that my fury shall come up in my face." [Ezekiel 38:17-18]
This invasion, post-millennium, gathers nations for fire from heaven, affirming God's sovereignty over history's end.
IX. The Great White Throne Judgment
Heaven and Earth Flee Away
With Satan finally defeated, the stage is set for the final judgment:
"Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away, and there was found no place for them." [Revelation 20:11]
The Second Resurrection
All the dead who were not part of the first resurrection now stand before God:
"And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works." [Revelation 20:12–13]
The Second Death
"Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire." [Revelation 20:14–15]
But those who participated in the first resurrection are exempt:
"Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power." [Revelation 20:6]
The Judgment of Works
Jesus had warned that actions matter in the final accounting:
"For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works." [Matthew 16:27]
The corporal works of mercy will play a decisive role, as Christ taught:
"Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.'" [Matthew 25:34–36]
X. The New Heaven and New Earth
All Things Made New
With judgment complete, the old order passes away:
"Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea." [Revelation 21:1]
Peter had prophesied this transformation:
"But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home." [2 Peter 3:13]
Isaiah had seen this vision long before:
"For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered or come to mind." [Isaiah 65:17]
The Curse Removed
The ancient curse laid upon creation is finally lifted:
"And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him." [Revelation 22:3]
This reverses the curse pronounced in Eden:
"Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life." [Genesis 3:17]
XI. The New Jerusalem
The Holy City Descends
John beholds the centerpiece of the new creation:
"Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." [Revelation 21:2]
God Dwells with Humanity
"And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, 'Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.'" [Revelation 21:3]
This is the fulfillment of God's eternal promise, echoing from Eden through the Tabernacle and Temple, now made complete:
"I will walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people." [Leviticus 26:12]
The End of Sorrow
"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." [Revelation 21:4]
From his throne, God declares:
"Behold, I make all things new." [Revelation 21:5]
The Nations and Kings Enter
The New Jerusalem welcomes the redeemed from all peoples:
"And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it." [Revelation 21:24]
Gentiles stream in, fulfilling Isaiah:
"And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising." [Isaiah 60:3]
Yet purity reigns: "There shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life." (Revelation 21:27). This inclusion heals the nations, with the tree's leaves "for the healing of the nations" (Revelation 22:2), reversing Babel's division.
XII. The Glory of the Holy City
The Dimensions and Materials
The city is described in magnificent detail:
"The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones... The twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass." [Revelation 21:18–19, 21]
The city itself is massive:
"The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal." [Revelation 21:16]
No Temple Needed
"But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light." [Revelation 21:22–23]
The Gates Never Close
"Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there). And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life." [Revelation 21:25–27]
The River and Tree of Life
In the heart of the city flows a river:
"And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations." [Revelation 22:1–2]
The tree of life, which was lost in Eden when Adam and Eve were driven out, now returns—and all may eat of it freely.
XIII. The Eternal Kingdom
The Servants of God Reign Forever
"And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever." [Revelation 22:3–5]
The Promise Sealed
The angel tells John:
"These words are faithful and true. And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent His angel to show His servants the things which must shortly take place." [Revelation 22:6]
And Jesus himself declares:
"Behold, I am coming quickly! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book." [Revelation 22:7]
The Invitation
The book closes with an invitation that echoes across time:
"And the Spirit and the bride say, 'Come!' And let him who hears say, 'Come!' And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely." [Revelation 22:17]
And the final promise:
"He who testifies to these things says, 'Surely I am coming quickly.' Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen." [Revelation 22:20–21]
Epilogue: The Meaning
"Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book." [Revelation 22:7]
"Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city." [Revelation 22:14]
A curse on tamperers: "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." (Revelation 22:18-19).
"I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last." (Revelation 22:13).
This is the Christian apocalypse—not merely an ending, but a transformation. The story that began in a garden with the fall of Adam closes in a city with the restoration of all things. The Tree of Life returns. God dwells with humanity. Death is defeated. Satan is vanquished. The curse is lifted.
It is a story of judgment, yes—but ultimately of redemption. Of creation groaning in travail but finally giving birth to glory. Of a long exile ending in homecoming. Of the Lamb who was slain now reigning as King. Of the Second Adam undoing what the first Adam broke.
"Behold, I make all things new."
Maranatha Come, O Lord Our Lord has come
