VITRIOL “Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem,” “Visit the interior of the earth, and by rectifying what you find there, you will discover the hidden stone.”
The Great Work, the Magnum Opus of the Philosopher is to create The Stone. …..
"It is the Stone that is not a stone, a thing most perfect and most mysterious, a treasure hidden in the heart of the Earth, waiting to be freed by the hand of wisdom."
- Thomas Vaughan, Anthroposophia Theomagica, 1650)
"Know that the Stone is the hidden fire of the universe, the soul of all things, and the secret key that opens the gates of the heavens."
- The Turba Philosophorum
“The Stone is hidden within all things, yet it is not seen. It is known to the wise and foolish to the ignorant.”
- The Turba Philosophorum (9th Century, Arabic Alchemical Text)
An investigation and exploration of that which is the ultimate goal of the Alchemists: The Lapis Philosophorum, the Stone of the Philosophers.
What is the Stone?
- “And after this manner, the Philosophers have hidden their Stone under a multitude of names, which confuse the ignorant.”
- Nicolas Flamel (14th Century, French Alchemist)
only achieved through the successful completion of the Magnum Opus.
It’s abilities
- Transmute base metals like lead into gold (symbolizing material perfection).
- Heal diseases and grant immortality through the Elixir of Life (symbolizing spiritual regeneration and eternal life).
- Serve as the embodiment of divine wisdom, enlightenment, and the union of opposites (symbolizing spiritual perfection and unity).
- The ability to transform anything into Gold/Divinity
"The Philosopher’s Stone is the spirit made flesh, the divine light imprisoned in the darkness of matter. It is the medicine of life, the redeemer of all things corrupted."
- Paracelsus
“It is called the Philosopher’s Stone because it is a stone, and yet no stone; it is fixed, and yet volatile; it conquers all things, and yet suffers itself; it is neither liquid nor solid; it is neither fixed nor volatile, and yet it is both.”
- Basil Valentine (15th Century Alchemist)
it was also known as "the tincture" and "the powder" Projection powder
the Stone is:
- Created
- Discovered
- Brought into manifestation/reality
- Transformed from the Prima Materia into it, The Stone
The philosopher's stone is created and/or discovered through the alchemical process known as The Magnum Opus or The Great Work. When expressed in colours, the work may pass through phases of nigredo, albedo, citrinitas, and rubedo. When expressed as a series of chemical processes it often includes seven or twelve stages concluding in multiplication, and projection.
"The Stone is a thing that hath in it all that Nature can desire. It is a fire that burns in the midst of the sea without being extinguished, a fire that burns without fuel, a water that wets not the hand, an air which cannot be touched, and an earth which cannot be seen."
- Nicolas Flamel
Discovery & Creation
Is The Stone created or discovered?
Or perhaps it is both simultaneously? For this is the path of the true Alchemist
The Goal of the Magnum Opus
The discovery, creation, and/or attainment of the Stone is the ultimate goal of The Magnum Opus, of the Great Work of Alchemy and the Human incarnation. It is the Summum Bonum
History
“Transform nature into its opposite and sublimate the body into spirit. Then you will have the Philosopher’s Stone.”
- Zosimos of Panopolis (3rd Century, Greek Alchemist)
Elias Ashmole and the anonymous author of Gloria Mundi (1620) claim that its history goes back to Adam, who acquired the knowledge of the stone directly from God. This knowledge was said to have been passed down through biblical patriarchs, giving them their longevity.
Many of the medieval allegories of Christ were adopted for the lapis, and the Christ and the Stone were indeed taken as identical in a mystical sense.
In some texts, it is simply called "stone", or our stone, or in the case of Thomas Norton's Ordinal, "oure delycious stone".
The term Lapis Philosophorum emerged in the Latin writings of medieval and Renaissance alchemists, such as Geber (Jabir ibn Hayyan) and Paracelsus.
“The Stone is One, the Medicine is One, to which all Philosophers give different names. It is a divine mystery, known only to the wise.”
- Thomas Vaughan (17th Century, Mystical Alchemist)
Ancient sources
The transmission of the idea through history
Those who are said to have attained the Stone
Jesus His life predates the medieval and renaissance alchemy where most of the symbolism comes from, but if anybody attained the Stone, then he did as demonstrated by his resurrection. In fact, many renaissance alchemical manuscripts integrate in the Christ Mythos and see Yeshua as the representation of the one who has completed The Great Work
Nicolas Flamel (1330–1418) A French scribe and manuscript-seller turned legendary alchemist. Flamel is said to have discovered the Philosopher’s Stone through his study of an ancient alchemical text, enabling him to transmute metals into gold and achieve immortality. His wife, Perenelle, is also associated with this legend. His story gained mythical status in later alchemical traditions.
Count of St. Germain (1712–1784?) A mysterious European figure rumored to be an alchemist, musician, and diplomat with an unusually long life. Legends suggest St. Germain possessed the Philosopher’s Stone, granting him immortality and extraordinary knowledge. He became a central figure in mystical and esoteric traditions.
Albertus Magnus (c. 1200–1280) A German Dominican friar, theologian, and one of the greatest medieval scholars of natural philosophy and alchemy. Albertus Magnus is said to have discovered the Philosopher’s Stone and used it to create gold. One legend claims he used the Stone to host a lavish banquet in the dead of winter for Thomas Aquinas, his student, to demonstrate the power of the Great Work.
Many others have been rumoured to have attained the Stone. ….
“Philosopher”
Greek philosophos, meaning "lover of wisdom."
The ultimate culmination of Wisdom A True Philosopher is a Lover of Sophia.
One who has attained the Philosophers’ Stone has attained the peak and perfection of Wisdom.
Lover of wisdom/Sophia
“Lover of Sophia” Represents Sophia’s triumph
Sofa is Divine Wisdom personified. Wisdom fell into ignorance and got stuck on earth in humanity. The lover of true Wisdom completes the Great Work and reverses the Fall.
The Stone of the Philosophers
It may be noted that the Latin expression lapis philosophorum, as well as the Arabic ḥajar al-falāsifa from which the Latin derives, both employ the plural form of the word for philosopher. Thus a literal translation would be philosophers' stone rather than philosopher's stone. The Stone of the Philosophers - plural
Not really owned by a single philosopher. But one stone that all philosophers share.
“Stone”
“The Philosopher’s Stone is the microcosmic sun within man, reflecting the macrocosmic sun of the divine.”
- Heinrich Khunrath (16th Century, German Alchemist)
“This most noble body, the Philosopher’s Stone, is a condensed spirit, a light fixed in the gross body, and it has the power of transmuting all metallic matter into gold.”
- Isaac Newton (17th Century, Scientist and Alchemist)
Meanings of why Stone is the Symbol
Permanence and Perfection eternal perfection and indestructibility. Just as a physical stone is resilient and enduring, the Philosopher’s Stone symbolizes the immutable, eternal truth/reality/essence…
Foundation of Creation: The Stone is a metaphor for the prima materia (the first matter) from which all things are created. It is the "cornerstone" or essential foundation of the universe. In esoteric traditions, the Stone is linked to the idea of the philosophical foundation—the basis upon which the Great Work of transformation is built. The Cornerstone - AND the Capstone
Unity of Spirit and Matter: The Stone represents the synthesis of the spiritual and material realms. It is both tangible and intangible, embodying the perfect balance between heaven and earth, the visible and invisible, the fixed and the volatile. Solve et Coagula The most simple and foundational form of life, yet the most exalted.
Mystical Stone A magical item that is formed on the earth.
Like a diamond or precious stone is formed through a long time and in the right conditions somewhere deep in the earth The Alchemical Mountain - it must occur within the earth in a dark hidden place and then be found.
Jesus and the foundation stone - the stone that the builders rejected
The legend of the stone was also compared to the biblical history of the Temple of Solomon and the rejected cornerstone described in Psalm 118. *“The stone which the builders rejected Is become the chief corner-stone. This is the LORD’S doing; It is marvellous in our eyes.”
Verses 22-23 are quoted in Matthew. Jesus said to them (the chief priests and the elders of the people), "Have you never read in the Scriptures: "'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"
"The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone." (Matthew 21:42; Mark 12:10; Luke 20:17; Psalm 118:22)
"The stone which the builders rejected” is humanity, is the human soul Is one’s self, you are the cornerstone and the foundation. You rejected yourself
The phrase originates in Psalm 118:22, part of a larger hymn celebrating God’s steadfast love and salvation. The "rejected stone" is seen as a metaphor for something overlooked or dismissed that ultimately becomes essential.
YOU are the rejected stone, but you can take your raw stone and form yourself into the cornerstone of the Temple. that which is dismissed or undervalued by the world often contains the greatest wisdom or divine essence.
“Builders”
The Gem that fell from Lucifer’s Diadem
In Gnosticism, the Stone represents the divine spark trapped in matter, awaiting liberation through the alchemist’s work. Connected to the gemstone that fell from Lucifer’s Diadem and fell to earth
The emerald was said to have adorned Lucifer's diadem before his fall. As the "Light Bearer" (Lux Ferre), Lucifer was a radiant celestial being who rebelled against divine authority and fell from grace. When Lucifer was cast down, the emerald fell to Earth, symbolizing a fragment of divine light or wisdom that became embedded in the material world.
Connection between emerald tablet and emerald stone?
divine knowledge or wisdom that was "lost" or "fallen" into the material plane. Humanity’s journey, like that of the emerald, involves rediscovering and reclaiming this divine wisdom, hidden within the material world and within ourselves. Finding the stone, purifying it, refining it, polishing it, extracting it from the earth….
About The Stone
Abilities and Properties
The most commonly mentioned properties are the ability to transmute base metals into gold or silver, the ability to heal all forms of illness and prolong the life of any person who consumes a small part of the philosopher's stone diluted in wine.
Other mentioned properties include: creation of perpetually burning lamps,20 transmutation of common crystals into precious stones and diamonds,20 reviving of dead plants,20 creation of flexible or malleable glass,21 and the creation of a clone or homunculus.
"The Stone is the Universal Medicine, the hidden fire that transmutes imperfection into perfection. It is the key to all mysteries, the master of all elements."
- Geber (Jabir ibn Hayyan)
"The Stone is the water of life and the fire of transformation. It is the secret that revives the dead and grants eternal youth to the living."
- Maria Prophetissa
Appearance
descriptions from alchemical texts “a ruby-red substance” “a glowing white powder”
According to alchemical texts, the stone of the philosophers came in two varieties, prepared by an almost identical method: white (for the purpose of making silver), and red (for the purpose of making gold), the white stone being a less matured version of the red stone.
Some ancient and medieval alchemical texts leave clues to the physical appearance of the stone of the philosophers, specifically the red stone. It is often said to be orange (saffron coloured) or red when ground to powder. Or in a solid form, an intermediate between red and purple, transparent and glass-like.30 The weight is spoken of as being heavier than gold,31 and it is soluble in any liquid, and incombustible in fire.32
"The Stone appears as a ruby-red crystal, shining with an inner light like the Sun. In its white form, it is like pure snow, and in its red form, it burns with the brilliance of fire."
- Michael Maier, Atalanta Fugiens, 1617
"The Stone is like a translucent gem, glowing with the colors of dawn. It is small yet heavy, radiant yet humble, a paradox in itself."
- Thomas Vaughan, Anthroposophia Theomagica, 1650
"It is the purest of substances, heavier than gold yet small enough to hide in the palm of one’s hand. Its brilliance is like the morning star, and its form is as eternal as the heavens."
- Isaac Newton (alchemical notes)
"The Stone is the Red King, resplendent as the Sun at noon. It is the White Queen, fair as the Moon on a clear night. In its final form, it is the blood of the dragon and the light of the stars."
- The Book of the Holy Trinity (15th Century)
The Symbol of the Stone
“Make a circle of the man and woman, draw out of it a square, and from the square a triangle; make a circle, and thou shalt have the Philosopher’s Stone.”
- The Rosarium Philosophorum (16th Century)
The Squared Circle
Circle, Square, Triangle, Circle
- an infinite series of these shapes within each other
- Circle: Eternity, unity, and the infinite.
- Square: Stability, materiality, and the four elements.
- Triangle: Trinity, divine ascent, and alchemical fire.
“Make of a man and woman a circle; then a quadrangle; out of this a triangle; make again a circle, and you will have the Stone of the Wise. Thus is made the stone, which thou canst not discover, unless you, through diligence, learn to understand this geometrical teaching.”
- Atalanta Fugiens
“In like manner the Philosophers would have the quadrangle reduced into a triangle, that is, into body, Spirit, and Soul, which three do appear in three previous colors before redness, for example, the body or earth in the blackness of Saturn, the Spirit in a lunar whiteness, as water, the Soul or air in a solar citrinity: then will the triangle be perfect, but this likewise must be changed into a circle, that is, into an invariable redness: By which operation the woman is converted into the man, and made one with him, and the senary the first number of the perfect completed by one, two, having returned again to an unit, in which is eternal rest and peace.”
- Atalanta Fugiens
How To Create/Discover It
I don’t know how to create or discover the Stone. And even if I did, I likely would not be able to explain to you how to do it, except the mysterious “language of the birds” of Alchemy.
The entire corpus of Alchemy is intended to teach how to create The Stone.
going through the universal alchemical process Blackening Whitening Yellowing Redding
But let’s look at what the Alchemists themselves have said to get some hints and clues….
"Take the crude and volatile Mercury, and unite it with its Sun and its Moon. Let it be calcined, dissolved, and distilled, until all impurities are removed. When the red and white flowers appear, the Stone will be near completion."
- Nicolas Flamel
"The Stone is born from one substance, it is perfected by one process, and it is brought to life by one secret fire. He who knows this fire knows the secret of the sages."
- The Twelve Keys of Basil Valentine
"Dissolve, purify, coagulate, and repeat this process thrice seven times. For only through patience and perseverance will the Stone reveal itself in its perfected form."
- Heinrich Khunrath, Amphitheatrum Sapientiae Aeternae
Going through the process 7x and 7x7 times
"Take the King and the Queen, and let them embrace in the bath of the Green Lion. From their union, a child will be born—the radiant Stone of the Wise."
- The Rosarium Philosophorum
"The Stone is made from the prima materia, which is found everywhere but known to few. It is prepared by fire, purified by water, and fixed by air. When it turns red as blood, it is ready."
- Parcelsus
Major Themes of The Stone
Unity of Opposites:
The Stone embodies the reconciliation of dualities: spirit and matter, masculine and feminine, Sun and Moon.
- * Unity of Spirit and Matter**
Uunification of opposites: Masculine (Sun, Sulfur) and Feminine (Moon, Mercury). Spirit and Matter. Fixed and Volatile. Darkness (Nigredo) and Light (Rubedo). This reflects the alchemical axiom of solve et coagula ("dissolve and coagulate"), the process of breaking down dualities to create a unified and perfected whole.
"The Stone is the King and the Queen, the Red and the White, the life-giving elixir that arises from the union of opposites. It is the mystery of mysteries."
- The Book of Lambspring
Hidden Wisdom:
The Stone is described as hidden, a secret that requires inner wisdom, spiritual practice, and understanding of nature to uncover.
Transformation:
The Philosopher’s Stone symbolizes the alchemical and spiritual process of purification, enlightenment, and the perfection of self and matter.
Divine and Cosmic Nature:
Many quotes emphasize the Stone’s divine origin and its connection to the cosmos, reflecting the Hermetic principle of the microcosm and macrocosm.
The Stone is the microcosm within the macrocosm, the key to understanding and aligning with the divine order of the universe.
Healing and Perfection:
The Stone is frequently described as a medicine or elixir capable of healing the soul, perfecting nature, and granting immortality.
Perfection of Matter/Spirit, Microcosm/Macrocosm The Perfection of Matter and Spirit The stone has both material and spiritual power
Mystical Paradox & Mystical Stone
Redemption
The Diamond Light body
The Diamond Light body The Stone as a metaphor and symbol of the Adept who has crystallized the aura and transcended death, created the solar light body
The idea that through going through the alchemical process within one’s consciousness And through crystalizing successive layers of one’s aura, that one can create/attain the rainbow body, Solar Body, Light Body….
One creates a body that transcends physical death and is a vehicle and chariot for consciousness….
The Solar Body or Diamond Light Body: The Stone represents the adept’s crystallized soul, aligned with the celestial spheres and transcending physical limitations. In Astrotheurgy, practitioners aim to create a spiritual body capable of navigating the heavens, much like the alchemical Stone grants immortality and divine union.
“Seek the Stone of the wise, that in which all treasures lie, for it is the perfection of the universe, the hidden treasure of all creation.”
- George Ripley (15th Century, English Alchemist)
“The Philosopher’s Stone is that which turns lead into gold and the soul into God.”
- Albertus Magnus (13th Century, Scholastic Philosopher and Alchemist)
“Within man is the Stone, and it is the One Thing, the root of the whole world, and the powers of heaven and earth are contained in it.”
- The Book of Lambspring (16th Century, Alchemical Emblem Book)
Astrological and Celestial links
The Philosopher’s Stone is the quintessence, representing the perfected synthesis of the four classical elements—Earth, Water, Air, and Fire—along with the fifth element, Aether, the celestial or spiritual essence. In astrology, the celestial spheres govern the elements, linking the Stone to the harmonies of the heavens. Just as planets influence earthly affairs, the Stone symbolizes the integration of cosmic forces within the self.
Seven Metals and Seven Planets: Alchemists associated the seven classical planets with seven metals, which must be refined and harmonized in the Great Work:
Saturn (Lead): The base matter, representing inertia and limitation (Nigredo). Jupiter (Tin): Expansion and higher wisdom. Mars (Iron): Action and willpower. Venus (Copper): Love and beauty. Mercury (Mercury): Transformation and balance. Moon (Silver): Purity and intuition (Albedo). Sun (Gold): Perfection and divine enlightenment (Rubedo). The Philosopher’s Stone represents the harmonization of planetary energies, the transcendence of their limitations, and their unification into a perfected essence.
Zodiacal Influences 12 Zodiacal Signs: The zodiac corresponds to the process of spiritual and material transformation. For example: Aries (Fire) initiates the transformative spark. Libra (Air) represents balance and harmony. Pisces (Water) symbolizes spiritual dissolution and rebirth. The Philosopher’s Stone is the result of journeying through the zodiac, integrating its archetypal energies into a unified whole.
The Stone as a Celestial Vessel The Philosopher’s Stone can be seen as a condensed form of celestial energy, capturing the essence of the heavens in a tangible or spiritual form. In Astrotheurgy, the Stone’s role mirrors that of a talisman or magical object infused with planetary and stellar energies. But in this case, it is the human body and soul that is that talisman. That has been transformed and transmuted into ….
The Stone as the Crown of the Magus The Stone symbolizes the crown chakra, linking the adept’s spiritual enlightenment to the stars, the "crown" of the cosmos.
The Holy Grail
Connection to the Holy Grail…
The Stone can produce or transform the liquid, held in the Grail
Redemption of the Fallen Light
Finding/creating the stone and restoring the lost gem
Lucifer as a Dual Symbol: In esotericism, Lucifer is often interpreted not just as a fallen angel but as a bringer of light, a Promethean figure who brings divine knowledge to humanity.
In Gnosticism, the fall of Sophia (Wisdom) into the material world parallels the fall of the emerald and Lucifer. The creation of the Stone within this world and this life
The emerald is often associated with the heart chakra and the center of divine love and wisdom. In many esoteric traditions, the heart is the seat of the soul and the connection point between the material and spiritual worlds.
Just as the fallen emerald symbolizes divine wisdom trapped in the material world, the Philosopher’s Stone represents the recovery and reintegration of that divine wisdom.
The emerald (or divine light) symbolizes the divine spark within humans that remains embedded in the physical world after the fall.
Alchemy is the process of reclaiming the lost divinity within matter. The Great Work mirrors the journey of the soul as it strives to free itself from the impurities of material existence and return to its divine origin. The Philosopher’s Stone, as the product of the Magnum Opus, represents the reunification of spirit and matter, echoing the return of the fallen emerald to its celestial state.
