Stephen was the first martyr of the Church, a deacon filled with faith, wisdom, and charity. His vision of the Son of Man at the right hand of God and his forgiveness of those who killed him established the pattern of Christian martyrdom: witness to Christ, courage before violence, and love for one’s enemies.
