Giotto di Bondone, usually known simply as Giotto, was a Florentine painter and architect of the late Middle Ages and the Proto-Renaissance. He lived c. 1267–1337 and became one of the decisive figures in the renewal of Western sacred art.

His great biblical masterpiece is the fresco cycle of the Scrovegni Chapel, also called the Arena Chapel, in Padua. Completed around 1305, the chapel gathers the Life of the Virgin and the Life of Christ into a single visual drama of Salvation, ending beneath the great image of the Last Judgment.

Before Giotto, much Italian sacred painting still carried the solemn abstraction of Byzantine iconography. Figures were holy, hieratic, and symbolic, but often distant from ordinary human life. Giotto did not remove the sacredness. He gave it flesh.

His saints and Gospel figures stand with weight. Their robes fall over real bodies. Their faces register sorrow, tenderness, shame, astonishment, fear, and love. In Giotto, the New Testament becomes not only a doctrine to be believed, but a living drama to be seen, entered, and remembered.
The paintings gathered below can be read as an illustrated Gospel sequence. They move through the Mystery of Christ: His Nativity, His manifestation to the Magi, His Baptism, His teaching in the Temple, His public ministry, His entry into Jerusalem, His washing of the disciples’ feet, His betrayal, trial, Crucifixion, descent among the dead, Resurrection appearance, and Ascension. Giotto’s scenes are not merely decorative illustrations. They are acts of visual contemplation. Each image condenses a Gospel moment into human gesture: Judas stepping forward to kiss Christ; the apostles gathered in confusion and fear; Christ bending low to wash the feet of His disciples; Mary and the holy women grieving before the Cross; the risen Christ turning toward Mary Magdalene in the garden.

The Scrovegni Chapel cycle draws directly on the Bible, especially the New Testament, while also standing within the wider devotional imagination of medieval Christianity. The Life of the Virgin reflects traditions preserved in texts such as The Golden Legend, and the Life of Christ belongs to the medieval practice of contemplating the Gospel scenes as if one were present within them. This is why Giotto’s art feels so immediate. He does not paint abstract episodes floating outside time. He paints sacred history as embodied memory. The viewer is placed near the scene, almost inside it: beside the crowd, at the table, before the Cross, near the tomb.
Giotto marks one of the great turning points in Christian art. He helped open the way toward the Renaissance by restoring volume, space, bodily presence, emotional truth, and dramatic sequence to painting. Yet his importance is not only technical.
Read the paintings below as a visual Gospel, not simply as separate artworks. Follow the movement from birth to ministry, from ministry to Passion, from Passion to Resurrection and Ascension. Notice especially the hands, faces, glances, and bodily postures. Giotto’s genius is often found in these small human signs: the turned head, the lowered gaze, the hand reaching forward, the gathered crowd, the grief that bends the body toward the beloved dead. Through these gestures, the sacred story becomes near.
