Working ledger — 114 Thomas sayings. This combines the two existing planning pages and the Lambdin text. Initial classification follows the user's first-pass plan; it is provisional, not a completed scholarly verse comparison.
Policy: The four canonical Gospels retain their chronology and wording. Only distinctive Thomas material should enter the narrative. Avoid all newly invented dialogue or scene-setting; use existing source introductions only. Thomas inclusions use blue text as temporary internal placement markup, with each logion tracked here and in editorial notes. Blue will not appear in the final book. Thomas placement is thematic and reconstructed, never historically established.
Source: Gospel of Thomas. Plans: Gospel of Thomas — Integration Plan for the One Gospel and Thomasine Discourses for The One Gospel.
Full first-pass disposition completed: 84 distinct Thomas logia represented in 82 blue blocks, and 30 omitted (primarily canonical duplicates, internal Thomas repetitions or minor narrative variants). All 114 logia have a recorded decision below. Source locations in the master are provisional thematic placements, not independently attested chronology; some complex sayings remain subject to authorial reconsideration. The ledger represents all 114 logia once; logion 21 contains multiple motifs. Included logia 5, 16, 47, 62, 64, 72 use only their distinctive source-text excerpts, omitting parallel portions; the other inclusions generally reproduce the complete corresponding Lambdin saying, apart from typographic quotation normalization.

Literary placement review — 7 October 2026
The master was checked section by section for 84 distinct Thomas logia represented in 82 blue blocks against its source headers and adjacent canonical prose. All 82 blocks remain blue; 98 and 114 are present in §§68 and 217. The following six were moved intact from the Sermon on the Mount (§55) to a separately headed, undated Thomas group in the instructions to the Twelve (§75): 6, 14, 32, 68, 69, 95. Thomas 32 is no longer inside the canonical city-on-a-hill sentence. The §55 source line now cites only Matthew and Luke; §75 cites all seven Thomas sayings there, including 50. This placement uses a disciple setting but does not establish the sayings’ actual date. Thomas 14 remains provisional for the author’s inspection, as do 30 (§100A) and 71 (§158). Do not treat their inclusion as doctrinal agreement with adjacent canonical material.
The remaining clusters were reviewed for speaker, audience and flow. §68’s Thomas sayings follow the point where the canonical narrative has shifted from the crowd to the disciples; its seven-saying run, particularly 98 and 109, remains long and tonally uneven. §133 still contains nine undated Thomas sayings after an address to great multitudes; a heading now marks them as a separate thematic group. §183 has eight Thomas sayings after the canonical farewell discourse; a heading distinguishes them from John 15–16. §217 has six Thomas sayings amid the forty-day framework; a heading says they are undated because Thomas supplies no post-resurrection date. §32 is likewise marked undated so its four sayings are not presented as part of Nicodemus’s attested conversation. No source wording was changed for these headings.
Variant decisions remain open. Thomas 9 (sower) and 65 (tenants) stay omitted pending the author’s line-by-line choice; do not convert this provisional omission into a final judgment. See the endnotes for their wording differences. Other omitted variants likewise remain reviewable individually.
Second literary placement pass — 7 October 2026
The present master has 84 distinct Thomas logia represented in 82 blue blocks, organized by 221 permanent internal Gospel identifiers and four lettered Thomas-only inserts. This supersedes earlier placement lists in this ledger; the “INSERTED IN BLUE AT §” heading for each saying now gives its current location. The 30 omitted sayings remain provisional, especially variants 9 and 65, until the author decides them individually.
New Thomas-only sections: §68A gathers 3, 11, 15, 24, 29, 32, 74, 77, 83, 84 after §68’s private parable teaching; §100A gathers 30, 42, 47, 49, 56, 58, 75, 87, 100, 101, 105, 106, 110, 112 after the house teaching in §§99–100; §183A contains 28, 38, 40, 59, 67, 70, 92, 108 after the completed farewell discourse; §217A contains 12, 19, 51, 88, 113, 114 after the completed commission. Each section labels the Thomas material undated. These are editorial placements, not claims that Thomas dates the sayings to those scenes.
Other moves: 1 is now distinguished as the Thomas collection’s opening saying in §1; 10 and 91 moved from the mixed crowd setting of §122 to the disciples’ identity exchange in §91; 25 moved from the public scribe exchange in §168 to the brotherly-love teaching in §100; 27 moved from the synagogue scene in §124 to the mission instruction in §75; 46 moved from the crowd speech about John in §59 to the child teaching in the house in §99; 71 is currently placed at the public Temple cleansing in §158, where it remains a separate provisional saying. Thomas 31 is now a separate sourced saying after the canonical Nazareth account, rather than embedded inside its quotation. Thomas 100 is now the complete Lambdin saying in §100A for comparison; the canonical tax exchange in §166 is continuous.
Status: 14 (§75), 30 (§100A), and 71 (§158) remain blue and provisional. 12, 98, and 114 remain included under the author’s earlier choices. No omitted variant has been merged into canonical wording. See the editorial endnotes for audience and flow reasoning and remaining open cases.
Author-review proposal — three Thomas-only sessions (7 October 2026)
Status: Planning only. The master still contains four Thomas-only inserts (§68A, §100A, §183A, §217A) and other blue placements. No sayings have been moved or removed by this proposal. Thomas supplies no dates for these sessions; any location in the harmony is editorial.
1. The Kingdom and the Light — after §68
Use Thomas 24, 77, 83, 84, 3, 11, and 29 as the core. This moves from the disciples’ question about where Yeshua is, through light and images, to the kingdom and the relation of spirit and body. All seven are already together in §68A, but a tighter order and selection would make the section read as one sustained exchange. Review 32 separately as a close parallel to the city-on-a-hill saying. Hold 15 and 74 for the author’s decision; their subjects interrupt this sequence.
2. The Disciple and the World — after §100
Use Thomas 42, 47, 49, 56, 58, 75, 87, 110, 112, and 106 as a working sequence: passing through the world, renunciation and solitude, suffering and bodily dependence, then making two one. These are already in §100A. Review 30, 100, 101, and 105 outside this sequence. Thomas 30 is opaque; 100 parallels the later tax exchange; 101 contains a textual gap and a difficult family saying; 105 changes subject abruptly. Their inclusion remains an authorial decision.
3. The Farewell Teaching — after §183
The current §183A set—Thomas 28, 40, 59, 38, 92, 108, 70, and 67—has a workable progression from the world’s blindness to Yeshua’s departure, seeking, and bringing forth what is within. Keep it as a visibly separate undated sayings session rather than adding invented narrative transitions to John’s farewell discourse. Review the exact order and whether 67 makes a suitable ending.
The present post-resurrection group
Do not treat §217A as a dated forty-day dialogue simply because it follows the commission. Thomas 12 raises the leadership of James, and 114 raises a distinct interpretive problem about Mary and gender; both need separate author review. Thomas 51 and 113 concern the kingdom’s arrival and could be reconsidered alongside other kingdom sayings. Thomas 19 and 88 can be reassessed after the three core sessions are shaped. The current source note correctly labels all six sayings undated.
Criteria for individual integration
Keep a saying inside a canonical scene only when its speaker, audience, and subject fit that scene without creating a false sequence or altering a canonical quotation. Clear candidates for continued review include Thomas 31 near Nazareth, 52 near the testimony about John, 64 near the banquet, and 102 near the woes. Reconsider Thomas 71 at the Temple cleansing: its claim that the house will not be rebuilt sits beside John’s three-day temple saying and may read as a contradiction rather than an explanation. Keep all source numbers and blue review markup until the author approves the final selection.
Specific placements to reconsider
- Thomas 61 at §61: Salome's exchange follows Luke's account of an unnamed woman who anoints Yeshua. The separate subheading helps, but the adjacency may invite readers to identify Salome with that woman. Thomas does not make that identification. Consider moving the exchange into a Thomas-only session or holding it.
- Thomas 60 at §112: Its Samaritan carrying a lamb shares a Samaritan figure with the Good Samaritan parable, but it is a different episode with a different subject. The lexical resemblance alone is weak grounds for placing it there.
- Thomas 50 and 14 at §75: The account of coming from the Light and the sharp words about fasting, prayer, and alms interrupt the mission instructions. Thomas 14 partly echoes the mission instructions about receiving food and healing; its earlier sentences need separate treatment. Thomas 50 may fit a first-disciple or light session better.
- Thomas 85 at §173: Its saying about Adam and death is placed among end-time sayings in the Olivet Discourse. It has a thematic link but no evident discourse link; review it separately from Thomas 18 and 111.
- Thomas 71 at §158: The present side-by-side placement with John's temple saying remains the most urgent individual integration decision. Neither saying should be silently paraphrased into the other.
Implemented Thomas arrangement — 7 October 2026
The master still has four lettered Thomas-only sections. §68A now groups the light, kingdom, image, life, and spirit sayings, and places the Salome exchange under its own heading. Thomas 50 moved from §75 to §68A; Thomas 61 moved from §61 to §68A; Thomas 85 moved from §173 to §68A. Thomas 74 moved from §68A to §100A so the kingdom-and-light group can end with the Salome exchange. §100A now starts with a sequence on discipleship, the world, death, repose, and oneness. Thomas 60 moved from §112 to §100A; its Samaritan is no longer beside Luke's Good Samaritan. The difficult sayings already in §100A remain under “Other undated sayings,” so none were silently omitted. §183A keeps its eight sayings in the earlier proposed order and now has a heading that states its placement after the farewell discourse without assigning them to that night.
Thomas 71 remains in §158 but stands after the canonical Temple account under a separate undated heading rather than between John's temple saying and the reply to it. Thomas 14 remains in the clearly marked undated mission-associated cluster because its latter part concerns receiving food and healing; its opening words about fasting, prayer, and alms still require an authorial decision. Thomas 12 and 114 remain in §217A for author review. This arrangement is thematic, not a claim that Thomas dates any of these sayings. The manuscript still contains 84 distinct included logia in 82 blue blocks; the canonical narrative wording was preserved.
