Johann Sebastian Bach

  • St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244 — The pinnacle of Passion music. A vast oratorio on the Gospel of Matthew for double choir and orchestra. Key recordings: Gardiner / Monteverdi Choir (1988); Herreweghe / Collegium Vocale Gent; Suzuki / Bach Collegium Japan.
  • St. John Passion, BWV 245 — More concise and dramatic than the Matthew Passion. Focuses on the trial and crucifixion per the Gospel of John. Recommended: Netherlands Bach Society (available on YouTube); Herreweghe or Harnoncourt.

  • Beethoven – Christ on the Mount of Olives (Christus am Ölberge) — Oratorio depicting the agony in Gethsemane; dramatic choral and solo passages culminating in resolution.
