"These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions…"
Yeshua selects and names the Twelve Apostles, gives them authority over unclean spirits and to heal every disease, and sends them out two by two to preach, heal, and cast out demons.
The Twelve
Simon (called Peter), Andrew his brother, James the son of Zebedee, John his brother, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew the tax collector, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot.
The Mission Discourse — Matthew 10
"Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. As you go, proclaim this message: 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.' Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give."
- Matthew 10:5-8
"I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves."
- Matthew 10:16
"Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul."
- Matthew 10:28
"Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it."
- Matthew 10:39
Mark 6:7-13
He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff — no bread, no bag, no money in their belts — but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics.
- Mark 6:7-9
They went out and proclaimed that people should repent. They cast out many demons and anointed many who were sick with oil and healed them.
