Ma’at names the Egyptian principle of truth, justice, balance, and right order: the harmony by which heaven, earth, society, and the human heart are held in their proper relation. It stands against isfet, disorder, falsehood, violence, and chaos. Egyptian kingship was understood as responsible for upholding Ma’at, while the weighing of the heart gave the principle an inward moral form.
For the Western Mystery Tradition, Ma’at is an early and enduring image of the ordered cosmos, the righteous ruler, and the Temple as a place where divine order is made present in the world. Within the Royal Art, it illuminates the work of rebuilding the inner Temple: sovereignty begins as fidelity to truth, right measure, and the restoration of harmony.
