Hieros gamos, “sacred marriage,” names a recurring symbolic pattern in which divine union, royal union, fertility, and cosmic renewal are brought into relation. Its forms differ across cultures and sources: sometimes it belongs to myth, sometimes to ritual language, sometimes to royal ideology, and sometimes to later philosophical or mystical interpretation. It should therefore not be treated as one uniform rite repeated everywhere.
As a symbolic constellation, sacred marriage joins heaven and earth, king and land, wisdom and power, soul and spirit, bride and bridegroom. It becomes especially important for the Royal Art because it anticipates the alchemical conjunction, the Sophianic mystery, the Grail marriage, and the restoration of divided being to a higher unity.
