Book IV is really the history of humanity learning:
Where does God dwell?
Garden. Mountain. Tent. Ark. Temple. Word. Heart. Person. Kingdom.
God called Abraham. God brought Israel from Egypt. God gave covenant. God dwelt in the Tabernacle. God established and judged kings. God sent prophets. the people broke covenant. the Temple fell. exile came again a remnant returned. the promise remained. a Messiah was expected.
Israel teaches the Exiled Prince that salvation is not merely ascent out of the world. It is fidelity to a promise unfolding through time.
The Greeks can ask what is eternally true. The Hermetists can map the cosmos. The alchemists can transform the vessel. But Israel teaches:
God remembers.
Even when the people forget.
Theology of remembrance.
The Son forgets the Father. Humanity forgets the Kingdom. Israel repeatedly forgets the covenant. But God does not forget the Son. And because God remembers, history can become the road home.
