The gardener does not invent plants. The gardener receives living material, shapes conditions, guides relation, prunes, protects, and collaborates with growth. Garden-making is therefore an ideal image of sub-creation: dependent upon givenness yet genuinely free. The artist is not an absolute manufacturer but a cultivator of forms capable of living.
