Beauty as a Way of Remembrance
Beauty awakens attention and longing. A poem, a landscape, a human face, a cathedral, or a melody can suggest an order greater than the immediate object. In the Platonic ascent, love of particular beauty may ripen into love of Beauty itself.
The Philosophical Lineage
Plato places beauty at the beginning of an ascent of Eros. Plotinus interprets beauty through participation in intelligible form. Ficino joins Platonic love with Renaissance Christian contemplation. Christian sacred art, hymnody, liturgy, and mystical writing repeatedly make beauty an approach to divine mystery.
The Three Transcendentals
Truth gives the Royal Art its intellectual discipline. Goodness gives it ethical orientation. Beauty moves the heart toward recognition and love. When severed, truth may become cold, goodness rigid, and beauty empty spectacle. Their reunion permits sacred art to instruct, heal, and delight.
Beauty and the Bard
The Bard does not merely decorate theological claims. He gives them sensible form: a voice that can be heard, an image that can be remembered, a story that can be inhabited. Beauty makes the invisible approachable while preserving its mystery.
