A total artwork integrates myth, text, music, image, architecture, ritual, costume, and performance. Cathedrals, liturgy, opera, Blake’s illuminated books, and Tolkien’s legendarium each approach this unity differently. Unlike spectacle for its own sake, a total sacred work makes a coherent world of participation in which the arts strengthen one another.
