In Petrarch’s Triumph of Love, Cupid rides in a victorious procession, followed by gods, heroes, poets, and rulers conquered by desire. Even strength, wisdom, and fame are powerless before Love. Petrarch himself becomes one of Love’s captives after seeing Laura, though this earthly passion will later be defeated by Chastity.
