Procession and return name a central Neoplatonic rhythm of reality. All things receive their being from the First, unfold through Intellect and Soul into a manifold cosmos, and turn back toward their source through likeness, contemplation, and participation. The Greek terms proodos and epistrophē are more exact than the modern word “emanation,” which can misleadingly suggest a material flow or a temporal production.
This pattern is essential to the Western Mystery Tradition because it provides a metaphysical grammar for descent, exile, remembrance, and return. Within the Royal Art, it helps clarify the Arc of the Prince without collapsing distinct traditions into one another: creation comes from God, the soul wanders in separation, and the Work is the restoration of conscious participation in the divine source.
