Desert fathers and early monasticism: practical path of inner purification and unceasing prayer. ## The Desert as Inward Christianity
The Desert Fathers and Mothers pursued silence, prayer, vigilance, purification of thoughts, simplicity, asceticism, and warfare with the passions. Their path shows that inward, esoteric Christianity did not exist only outside the Church. Later hesychasm continues this current through the Prayer of the Heart, the Transfiguration, the Uncreated Light, and theosis: Light received not as private possession, but as participation in God.
