Dramatis Personae means the cast of the drama. In the mythic high fantasy romance, this cast is not merely a list of fictional individuals. It is a symbolic order: Kings, Queens, Princes, Knights, Wizards, Dragons, Traitors, Prophets, Fools, Bards, and Dark Lords are recurring offices within the Story.
They return again and again because they are not arbitrary inventions. They are powers of the soul, powers of the world, and powers of reality itself.
The Mythic Cast
Every great mythic fantasy has Powers, Persons, Realms, Sacred Objects, Trials, and Revelations.
The persons carry the drama. The powers move behind them. The objects concentrate meaning. The realms externalize states of soul. The trials reveal allegiance. The revelations disclose the hidden plot.
Principal Orders
The Forces of Light
The King, Prince, Hero, Knight, Wizard, Prophet, Lady, Fellowship, Angel, Bard, and all those who serve the restoration of the Kingdom.
The Forces of Darkness
The Dark Lord, Dragon, Usurper, Sorcerer, Traitor, Tempter, Shadow Double, Beast, Horde, and all powers that serve domination, distortion, and anti-story.
Ambiguous Figures
The Trickster, Outlaw, Shapeshifter, Loathly Lady, Ancient One, Exile, Wounded King, and all figures who cannot be read simply as light or dark.
Archetypal Powers
The great symbolic polarities of the epic: Light and Darkness, Kingdom and Wasteland, True Crown and False Crown, Grail and Dragon-Hoard, Song and Machine, Road and Labyrinth.
Sacred Objects
Sword, Grail, Ring, Crown, Book, Key, Stone, Horn, Map, Staff, and all objects that carry destiny, authority, memory, or initiation.
Realms of the Story
Kingdom, Wasteland, Forest, Mountain, Cave, Underworld, Castle, Tower, Temple, Sea, Island, and the hidden geographies through which the soul travels.

Symbolic Function
High fantasy is a symbolic grammar. The same figures return because the soul recognizes them.
