The powers of darkness are the powers that hate the Story.
The Forces of Darkness are not merely enemies. They are distortions of being: tyranny, deception, domination, possession, false knowledge, despair, and the hatred of the Light. In the high fantasy epic romance, darkness appears both as an outer kingdom and as an inward temptation.

The Dragon guards what the hero must recover.
The Serpent
Temptation, cunning, false wisdom, forbidden knowledge, or chthonic power.
The Serpent speaks in half-truths and crooked paths.

The hero’s dark mirror. What the hero could become if they choose fear, pride, vengeance, or domination.
The Shadow Double reveals the hero’s possible fall.
The Beast
Dehumanized appetite, violence, rage, and instinct without spirit.
The Beast is force severed from soul.
The Giant / Ogre / Troll
Brute force, stupidity, obstruction, and the heavy powers of the lower world.
These figures block the road by mass, appetite, and dullness.
The Goblin / Orc / Demon Horde

Often faceless, mechanized, spiritually diminished, and absorbed into collective violence.
