Tolkien says fantasy succeeds when it has “the inner consistency of reality.”
A story-world must obey its own laws. Magic cannot be random. Myth cannot be arbitrary. The world must feel internally true.
Reality has narrative consistency. Providence, repetition, symbol, threshold, sacrifice, return, and eucatastrophe are not accidents. They are part of the inner consistency of the Great Story.
