Humanity's Forgotten Past and the Veil of Forgetting
There is a growing body of evidence — archaeological, mythological, and intuitive — that humanity is far older and far more accomplished than the conventional historical narrative allows. The standard model tells us that civilization began roughly five thousand years ago in Mesopotamia, that everything before was primitive, and that the arc of history bends steadily upward from savagery to sophistication.
The Primordial Tradition tells a different story. It tells us that we have forgotten — that we are a species suffering from a profound and collective amnesia, and that the civilizations we call "the beginning of history" are in fact the survivors of a catastrophe that erased a far older and far deeper chapter of the human story.
The Evidence of Amnesia
The Anomalies of the Ancient World
The conventional timeline cannot account for certain features of the ancient world without strain:
- The Great Pyramid of Giza — built with a precision of engineering that modern construction struggles to replicate, aligned to true north within 3/60th of a degree, incorporating mathematical constants (pi, the golden ratio) into its proportions. The standard explanation — that it was built by copper tools and manpower alone — grows less convincing the more closely the structure is examined.
- The megalithic sites scattered across the globe — Göbekli Tepe (dated to c. 9600 BCE, predating agriculture), Baalbek, Sacsayhuamán, the Osireion at Abydos — suggest a level of engineering knowledge that should not exist at the dates assigned to them.
- The Sphinx water erosion hypothesis — geologist Robert Schoch's argument that the erosion patterns on the Great Sphinx indicate rainfall weathering consistent with a date thousands of years earlier than the conventional attribution to Khafre (c. 2500 BCE), pushing its origin back to 7000 BCE or earlier.
- The consistency of flood myths across every ancient culture — Sumerian, Hebrew, Greek, Hindu, Chinese, Mesoamerican, Native American — pointing to a shared memory of a real catastrophic event, possibly linked to the end of the last Ice Age (c. 9700 BCE).
These anomalies do not prove a lost civilization in themselves. But taken together, they suggest that the conventional narrative is incomplete — that something significant has been forgotten.
The Mythic Memory
Every ancient tradition remembers a time before the present age when humanity possessed greater knowledge, greater spiritual capacity, and a direct relationship with the divine. The Egyptians called it Zep Tepi. The Greeks called it the Golden Age. The Hindus called it the Satya Yuga. The Hebrew tradition remembers the Garden of Eden.
These are not primitive fantasies. They are the mythic encoding of a collective memory — the recollection that humanity once knew more than it now knows, and that something catastrophic intervened to sever that knowledge from the present.
The Channeled and Esoteric Testimony
Beyond the archaeological and mythological evidence, the esoteric traditions themselves testify to the amnesia. A Course in Miracles describes the entire world of separation as a dream from which we must awaken — a forgetting so total that we do not even remember that we have forgotten. The Ra Material speaks of the "veil of forgetting" placed over incarnating souls as a feature of third-density experience — designed to create the conditions for genuine choice, but resulting in a profound disconnection from the soul's true nature and history.
The Theosophical tradition, through Blavatsky and her successors, taught that humanity has passed through multiple "root races" and civilizations — Lemurian, Atlantean — of which the present is only the latest. Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophy describes earlier states of consciousness — dreamlike, clairvoyant, participatory — that preceded the hard-edged waking consciousness of the modern mind.
What Was Forgotten
If the amnesia is real, what exactly was lost? The traditions converge on several answers:
- The knowledge of our divine origin — that human beings are not merely biological organisms but spiritual beings, children of a divine source, temporarily incarnated in matter.
- The sacred sciences — astronomy, geometry, alchemy, theurgy, the science of consciousness — which were not primitive superstitions but sophisticated technologies of transformation.
- The unity of the tradition — the understanding that all authentic spiritual paths lead to the same truth, and that the apparent diversity of religions masks an underlying unity.
- The capacity for direct spiritual perception — clairvoyance, communion with non-physical beings, awareness of subtle energies — faculties that the modern mind has atrophied through disuse and denial.
The Amnesia as Feature, Not Bug
There is a deeper teaching here, found especially in A Course in Miracles and the Ra Material: the forgetting may not be an accident. It may be a design feature of incarnation in this density of experience. The veil of forgetting creates the conditions for genuine free will — for the soul to choose love over fear without remembering that it is already loved, already divine, already home.
The amnesia is the darkness through which the light must be rediscovered. It is the exile that makes the return meaningful. It is the forgetting that makes the remembering sacred.
This does not make the amnesia less painful. It does not make the loss of the ancient knowledge less real. But it places that loss within a larger narrative — the narrative of the soul's journey through separation and back to unity — that gives it meaning.
Within the Royal Art Opus
The Royal Art is, at its deepest level, an act of anamnesis — remembering. It is the deliberate recovery of what the species has forgotten: the sacred sciences, the unity of the tradition, the divine origin of the soul, the path of return. The Library of Light is an archive of recovered memory. The Book of the Royal Art is a manual for awakening from the dream.
