♄ Saturn — The Builder. Architecture, discipline, structure, patience, Masonic craft, time, labor, the construction of the Temple in stone and in soul. The path of the ashlar.
♂ Mars — The Knight. Martial virtue, courage, physicality, combat, tapas, the warrior's code, the Quest, sacred masculinity. The path of the sword.
♀ Venus — The Bard. Poetry, music, beauty, eros, courtly love, aesthetics, the troubadour and Sufi traditions, sacred art. The path of the rose.
♃ Jupiter — The Philosopher. Wisdom, sacred law, ethics, theology as intellectual discipline, political philosophy, cosmological understanding, right judgment, the ordering of life according to truth. The path of the scepter.
☿ Mercury — The Wizard. Hermeticism, alchemy, magic, Astrology, ritual, correspondences, transformation, the Hermetic arts. The path of …..
☽ Moon — The Mystic. Receptive spirituality, inner vision, psychic development, dream, imagination, the astral, the feminine mysteries, contemplative silence. The path of …
☉ Sun — The Disciple of Light / The King. The Christic path, ACIM, devotion, prayer, scripture, forgiveness, the Way of Christ, the pursuit of God — culminating in sovereignty, integration, and the Crown. The vertical axis. The path of Light/gold.
Three-Tiered Grades
☽ Moon — The Mystic: Mystic → Sage → Prophet
The Dreamer is learning to pay attention to the inner world — dreams, intuitions, subtle impressions. The Seer has developed the faculty of inner vision and can perceive what is hidden. The Oracle has become a vessel for higher communication, a channel between worlds.
☿ Mercury — The Wizard: Apprentice → Adept → Magus
Classical and clean. The Apprentice learns the correspondences and basic operations. The Adept has achieved the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel — the Mercurial initiation par excellence. The Magus has mastered the art and can transmit it.
♀ Venus — The Bard: Minstrel → Troubadour → Master Bard
The Minstrel learns the craft — instrument, voice, verse, the technical foundations of beauty. The Troubadour has found his own voice and sings from genuine experience and devotion. The Master Bard creates work that transmits initiatory truth through beauty — his art is a vehicle of the Light.
☉ Sun — The Disciple / King: Disciple → Initiate → King
The Disciple follows. The Initiate has been transformed — has passed through death and rebirth, has received gnosis. The King has integrated all paths and now embodies the Light in sovereignty. This is the only path where the final grade is the culmination of the entire system.
♂ Mars — The Knight: Page → Squire → Knight
The most traditional and perhaps the most perfect. The Page serves and observes — learning the code, building basic fitness, studying the martial arts at a foundational level. The Squire trains under a knight, carries the weapons, prepares for battle — serious martial development, tested courage, the refining fire. The Knight has proven himself in trial and taken his vows — a fully formed warrior in service to the Grail.
♃ Jupiter — The Philosopher: Student → Scholar → Sage
The Student receives teaching. The Scholar has mastered a body of knowledge and can analyze, compare, and articulate. The Sage has moved beyond knowledge into wisdom — he doesn't just know the truth; he sees it operative in all things and governs his life accordingly.
♄ Saturn — The Builder: Entered Apprentice → Fellow Craft → Master Mason
These are the actual Masonic degrees, and they fit perfectly because the Masonic tradition is the Saturnian tradition. The Entered Apprentice learns to work the rough stone. The Fellow Craft develops skill and knowledge of the liberal arts. The Master Mason has confronted death (the Hiram legend) and can now build the Temple.
"spirituality" in the system isn't one thing. There are at least two distinct modes:
The receptive mode — the Mystic. Going inward, receiving vision, cultivating the subtle senses, dream, imagination, the astral body, the psychic faculties. This is lunar. The Moon reflects the Sun's light; the Mystic receives what is given. Feminine polarity.
The active mode — the Disciple. Seeking the Light, studying scripture, practicing forgiveness, walking the Way of Christ, philosophical inquiry, devotional prayer, the conscious pursuit of God. This is solar in character. The Disciple doesn't wait for vision — he follows the Light. Masculine polarity.
These two together form the complete spiritual life — the contemplative and the active, the via negativa and the via positiva, Mary and Martha. But they're genuinely different practices with different temperaments.
The Sun is the Light. The Disciple follows the Light. The King embodies the Light. These aren't two different things occupying the same planet — they're the beginning and end of the same path. The Disciple of Light becomes the King. The Sun-path is the path that begins in discipleship and culminates in sovereignty.
This actually mirrors the Christian mystery directly: Christ is both the Way (the path the disciple follows) and the King (the sovereign who rules). Following the Light is the royal path. The Disciple and the King aren't two separate vocations; they're the alpha and omega of the same solar vocation.
Under this reading, the Sun path has a unique structure compared to the other six. The other six are domains of mastery — specific arts and sciences you develop competency in. The Sun path is the central path of identity — who you are becoming, your relationship to the Light itself, your spiritual autobiography. It runs through and beneath all the others.
If the Sun takes the spiritual/devotional/Christic path, Jupiter is freed to be what it naturally is in the traditional system: the Philosopher-King function. Wisdom, law, sacred authority, right judgment, the ordering of society, ethics, higher learning, the governance of life according to truth.
Jupiter isn't the Priest so much as the Sage or the Philosopher — the one who understands the order of things and acts accordingly. This is where Plato, Pythagoras, and the Neoplatonists live. Where natural law and sacred jurisprudence live. Where your political philosophy (voluntaryist anarchism as the horizontal expression of Jupiterian justice) lives. Where the Traditionalist school (Guénon, Evola) lives. Where the ordering intelligence of the mystery school itself lives — the one who designs the curriculum, sets the standards, discerns the grades.
Jupiter is the Philosopher — the lover of wisdom who seeks to understand the cosmic order and align human life with it. Not the devotional seeker (that's the Sun/Disciple), not the magical operator (that's Mercury/Wizard), but the one who comprehends and governs according to principle.
This also resolves the Jupiter-King overlap: Jupiter governs the function of wise rulership as a skill and a study, while the Sun governs the actual becoming of the King as spiritual reality. You can study Jupiterian philosophy without being the King. But you cannot become the King without the Sun path.
Uranus as Bard/Scribe — but Venus already holds the bardic arts (poetry, music, beauty, the troubadour). And Mercury already holds the scribe function (communication, writing, the recording of knowledge). Uranus traditionally governs revolution, sudden insight, the lightning bolt of genius, the breaking of forms. If you do keep Uranus, it might be better mapped to the Revolutionary or Iconoclast — the one who shatters old forms to make way for new revelation. But this might fold into Mercury’s higher octave rather than standing alone.
Neptune as Prophet/Seer — but the Moon already governs psychic vision, dreams, the inner eye. Neptune is traditionally the higher octave of the Moon: cosmic mysticism, dissolution of boundaries, union with the All. The Prophet who speaks for God could fit here, but it could also fold into Moon (the visionary faculty) or Jupiter (the prophetic office as religious function).
Pluto as Initiation/Underworld — this one has the strongest case for independence. The descent into the underworld, the confrontation with death, the Nigredo, the stripping away of everything false — this is genuinely its own territory. It maps to stage 6 of the Arc (Descent) and to the entire Nigredo phase. The question is whether Pluto stands as its own path or whether the initiatory descent is something that happens within each path.
Work with seven primary paths (the classical planets) and treat the outer planets as modifiers or higher octaves rather than separate paths. Uranus is the higher octave of Mercury (revelation beyond reason). Neptune is the higher octave of Moon (cosmic mysticism beyond personal psychism). Pluto is the higher octave of Saturn (death and rebirth beyond structure and discipline). This preserves the Hermetic septenary while acknowledging the deeper dimensions.
