“The roots of the tree are in heaven, the branches in the earth.” - Heinrich Khunrath (1595)
A complete map of human spiritual evolution. Start at the bottom as unbalanced elements → grow upward through the Tree → reunite with the divine crown at the top. Hall used this plate as the culmination of his chapter on the Rosicrucians, calling it “the most perfect symbol ever constructed by the Fraternity to show the path of spiritual unfoldment.”
“The roots of the Rosicrucian Tree of Perfection rest in the crown of the King of the Universe. From the crown seven strands of the vital essence descend into the lower worlds, becoming the ten Sephiroth. The sunflowers represent the aspirants who turn their faces to the spiritual sun within. At the base the four elements interlace, signifying that the Great Work is accomplished and the divine nature established in the human constitution.” - Manly P. Hall
The Tree of Life inverted, a classic symbol in Qabalah, Rosicrucianism, and alchemy.
- Roots in heaven (the golden crown = Kether, the Divine Crown).
- Branches in the earthly realm = “As above, so below” turned literal: spiritual perfection must grow downward into matter.
- The golden crown on the white triangle
- The white triangle = the Supernal Triad (Kether-Chokmah-Binah) on the Qabalistic Tree.
- The crown = Kether itself, the primal point of divine light.
- Together: the origin of all perfection is purely divine; man must climb back up the tree to return to it.
- The radiant sun in the middle of the foliage
- The Tiphareth sphere (the 6th Sephirah), the Heart of the Tree, seat of the Solar Christ / Higher Self.
- Golden sunflowers turn toward it exactly like real sunflowers follow the sun – symbol of the soul’s aspiration toward divine illumination.
- The four interlocking colored circles at the bottom
- These are the Four Alchemical Elements in their perfected, overlapping state:
- White = Air (♂)
- Blue = Water (♀)
- Red = Fire (△)
- Green = Earth (▽)
- Their interlocking shows the Quintessence (fifth element, Spirit) has been achieved – the four lower Sephiroth (Netzach-Hod-Yesod-Malkuth) are now harmonized.
- This is the Philosopher’s Stone stage: the “rebis” or reconciled opposites.
