- The Lamp — illumination
- The Key — initiation and access
The Four Questions
- Compass: Where am I going?
- Mirror: Who am I?
- Lamp: What can I see?
- Key: What must be opened?
The Four Dangers They Answer
- Without the Compass: wandering
- Without the Mirror: self-deception
- Without the Lamp: blindness
- Without the Key: being stopped at the threshold
1. The Compass
The Compass is direction, orientation, vocation, discernment, and true north.
It belongs to the Prince because the Prince is in exile and needs to remember the way home. He does not know the way home, but deep within is an inner knowing that can point the way forward.
It symbolizes:
- direction
- destiny
- True Will
- the North Star
- moral orientation
- the path through the Wasteland
- the ability to navigate when the road is unclear
The Compass says: Do not wander aimlessly. Find the North.
2. The Mirror
The Mirror is self-knowledge.
It belongs to the Prince because the Prince has forgotten true identity. The Mirror allows the soul to see itself — not the ego-mask, but the true face.
It symbolizes:
- “Know thyself”
- self-examination
- shadow work
- recognition
- the soul as image of God
- illusion versus true seeing
- the Mirror of the Heart
- the world as mirror
The Mirror says: You cannot complete the Quest without seeing yourself truly.
3. The Lamp
The Lamp is inner light.
It belongs to the Prince because the Quest passes through darkness: forest, cave, night, labyrinth, underworld, exile, and uncertainty.
It symbolizes:
- guidance
- wisdom
- vigilance
- the Hermit’s lantern
- the lamp of the soul
- the light of conscience
- the flame of Tradition
- the light that shines in darkness
The Lamp says: Carry light into the places where the sun does not reach.
4. The Key
The Key is access.
It belongs to the Prince because the Quest is full of locked doors, sealed chambers, hidden libraries, inner gates, veils, and mysteries that cannot be forced open.
It symbolizes:
- initiation
- permission
- understanding
- unlocking hidden meaning
- the Keys of the Kingdom
- the Key of Solomon
- the key to Scripture
- the key to the self
- the key that opens the next stage
The Key says: Not every door opens by strength. Some open only by the right understanding.
- Compass — direction
- Mirror — self-knowledge
- Lamp — illumination
- Key — access
