The Divine Drama: The Theology of the Royal Art

(ACIM)

God eternally creates His Son in perfect Love. The Son dwells in the Kingdom of Heaven, sharing in God’s Being and creative joy. Within the Son’s mind arose a tiny mad idea—the impossible thought that separation from God might be possible. Forgetting to laugh, the Son took the impossible seriously and began to dream a world of time, space, fear, guilt, and death. From this dream arose the ego and the world it made. Yet nothing real was ever changed. Heaven remains exactly as God created it, and the Holy Spirit continuously calls every sleeping child of God to remember what has never been lost.

God Alone Is

• Before there was anything, before time began and space was formed, there is only God
• God’s primordial being can be said to exist in three different unfoldings: a primordial Nothingness or Void, and then expression as Infinity, then as Infinite Light/Love
• The Infinite Light of the Ain Soph Aur then unfolds into/as Kether, The Crown. Now there is only God and His Creation.
• God is perfect Love, perfect unity, and limitless creative extension.
• Creation is not the making of objects or a physical universe. Creation is the eternal extension of God’s Being.

The Creation of the Sonship

"God Himself is incomplete without His Sons.". “God did not will to be alone”

• Love shares itself because sharing increases joy. Through their creations, the Sons extend love and increase the joy of the Trinity.
• God creates His Son. The Sonship is collective rather than an individual person. All of humanity as individual soul’s are collectively The Son.
• This is Adam Kadmon - the perfect, primordial blueprint of Man.
• The Sonship is the totality of God’s creations and shares God’s nature.
• The relationship between God and the Son is one of Father & Son. A perfect union without loss of individuality or freedom. The Father and Son are perfectly united without confusion of their relationship. The Son is not the Father, yet nothing separates them. Their distinction is relational rather than spatial, psychological, or ontological separation.
• The Son possesses creative power because creation is shared with him and as his Father’s Son all that his Creator is is present in him.
• "God's creations are given all power that their own Creator has." (ACIM)
• The Sonship is the one divine Creation of God, containing all His creations in perfect unity. Within the dream, this single Son appears fragmented into countless individual minds, souls, and persons; yet beneath these appearances there remains one shared Self—the Christ.
• “Christ is God’s Son as He created Him.”(ACIM)
• ²Nothing that is real can be increased except by sharing it. ³That is why God Himself created you. [CE T-4.X.7:2-3]
• Love’s nature is extension. Joy’s nature is sharing. God creates because perfect Love gives all of itself. The Son is the recipient and extension of that complete self-giving. The Son then creates as God creates, extending the Love he received.

God is not incomplete, and He is not childless. ²Because He did not will to be alone, He created a Son like Himself. ³Do not deny Him His Son, for your unwillingness to accept His fatherhood has denied you yours. ⁴See His creation as His Son, for yours were created in honor of Him. ⁵The universe of love does not stop because you do not see it, and your closed eyes have not lost you the ability to see. ⁶Look upon the glory of His creation, and you will learn what God has kept for you God has given you a place in His Mind which is yours forever. ²But you could keep it only by giving it as it was given to you. ³Could you be alone there, if it was given you because God did not will to be alone? ⁴God’s Mind cannot be lessened; it can only be increased, and everything He creates has the function of creating. Love does not limit, and what it creates is not limited. - [CE T-11.I.10-11]

God would not have us be alone because He does not will to be alone. ²That is why He created His Son and gave him the power to create with Him. ³Our creations are as holy as we are, and we are the Sons of God Himself, and therefore as holy as He is. ⁴Through our creations we extend our love, and thus increase the joy of the Holy Trinity. ⁵You do not understand this for a very simple reason: You who are God’s Own treasure do not regard yourself as valuable. ⁶Given this belief, you cannot understand anything. [CE T-8.V.11]

The Kingdom of Heaven

• The pre-separation state is the Kingdom of Heaven. An infinite and eternal state and place and reality of perfection, wholeness, and unconditional love.
• Heaven is:
• timeless,
• changeless,
• perfectly joyful,
• wholly unified,
• beyond all conflict and opposites.
• infinitely creative, expansive
• a place of deep intimacy and relationship
• beautiful
• eternally discovering deeper expressions of Love
• Nothing is lacking because Heaven is complete.
• Knowledge—not perception—is the mode of being in Heaven. There is no need to perceive because nothing is separate from anything else. Knowledge is direct, immediate, and intimate knowing of Reality/Truth.

Creation & Extension: The Relationship of Father & Son

• Creation is infinite and only Love creates like itself.
• "Creation is the sum of all God's Thoughts, in number infinite, and everywhere without all limit." (ACIM)
• Creation is ongoing. Love continually extends itself.
• God → Son → the Son’s creations. God’s creative Thought proceeds to the Son; the Son’s creative thought proceeds to his creations. The Son’s creations belong within him as the Son belongs within God.
• The Father gives Being and creative power to the Son. The Son receives everything and extends it to his creations. The creations of the Son extend the Kingdom without reversing its order.
• “Nothing real can be increased except by sharing.” “That is why God created you.” “God created you to create.” (ACIM)
• Creation is not an event that happened once. It is the eternal activity of Love extending Itself. The Father gives all of Himself to the Son, and the Son, receiving everything, extends the same Love. Creation is therefore gift, reception, gratitude, and further giving without loss or exhaustion.
• God is Cause; the Son is His eternal Effect. The Son possesses the power to create because he resembles his Cause, but he cannot reverse causality and become his own creator. The wish for self-creation is therefore the wish to become cause of oneself—to receive existence from no one and owe nothing to the Father.
• God withheld nothing from His Son. He gave him perfect freedom because love cannot create slaves. The Son inherited not merely existence but creation itself. Nothing was forbidden him except what was impossible—that he could become something other than what God created him to be. Something other than infinite love, bliss, ….
• God grants His Son perfect freedom because freedom belongs to Love. The Son can use the power of his mind to deny his Father, refuse his inheritance, and dream an apparent world opposed to Heaven. God does not coerce him or retaliate against him, but neither does God make the dream real. The Son remains forever as God created him, even while he sleeps.
• In Heaven communication is total because being is shared. Nothing is private, hidden, withheld, defended, or misunderstood. To know and to be known are one.
• The Father and Son are alike in: holiness, love, spirit, freedom, creative power, eternal life, changelessness, shared will, limitless extension. But they differ in causal relationship: God created the Son; the Son did not create God.
• The Son is like God in nature and creative function, but not in origin. God is the primal Cause; the Son is His eternal Effect. The Son can extend Creation forward, but he cannot reverse Creation backward and become the cause of God or the cause of himself.
• The Father and Son are perfectly one, but their creative relationship has an eternal order. God creates the Son; the Son does not create God. God is Cause, and the Son is His eternal Effect. The Son then extends Creation through his own creations. His power is like God’s and without limit, but it cannot reverse causality, create his Creator, or make himself self-caused.
• “Only in this respect your creative power differs from His.” (ACIM)

The Tiny Mad Idea: The Thought of Separation & self-creation

• There is no historical fall that truly occurred in reality. Instead, there was a “tiny mad idea”, the impossible thought: What if I could exist apart from God? What if I could be creator instead of created?
• Expressions of the Thought of Separation
• What would it be like if I could create apart from my Father?
• What would it be like to have a kingdom of my own?
• What would it be like to become self-created?
• Maybe I myself can be God and make a creation according to my own image?
• It is a wish to replace God, reverse creation, and possess autonomous authorship. “The ego’s fundamental wish is to replace God.”(ACIM)
• It is crucial to understand that this thought was impossible from the beginning. Separation can be imagined, but it cannot actually be accomplished.
• The Son/Prince did not merely desire to create. Creation was already his inheritance. He desired to create alone—to possess a kingdom whose existence referred only to himself and acknowledged no Father above him.
• The tiny mad idea is specifically a reversal of causality. The Son attempts to say: I will not be the Son. I will be my own Father. I will owe my being to myself. I will create a reality that does not come from God. That is impossible because an effect cannot become the cause of its Cause.

The Son Forgot to Laugh: Believing in Illusion & Separation

• The Course poetically describes the Son as forgetting to laugh at this tiny mad idea.
• Had it immediately been recognized as absurd, nothing further would have seemed to happen. The problem was not that an impossible thought appeared. An impossible thought has no power. The apparent catastrophe began when the Son gave the thought belief and attempted to experience it as true.
• The idea was taken seriously. Fear entered when separation appeared possible. Once fear appears, an entire thought system begins to unfold.
• Yet, The Son is so totally and unconditionally loved and given such unconditional freedom that he is even allowed by his Father to turn away from him, to create a whole world of time and space and incarnation with all it’s insanity and evil and darkness to get lost in. God loves and respects his Son so infinitely much that he gives him total and absolute love and freedom - even to choose to deny his own Creator and Home. Yet God knows the Son must return someday, for in Reality, there is nowhere else to go.

The Birth of the Ego

• The ego is not a created thing. God did not create it.
• It is the thought system that arises from believing separation is possible.
• Its fundamental premises are:
• separation,
• individuality as isolation,
• lack,
• scarcity,
• conflict,
• guilt,
• fear,
• death.
• Everything the ego subsequently makes proceeds from these assumptions.
• We forgot that we are eternal co-creators participating in an infinite Creation and instead believe ourselves to be a separated, individual, body in a vast indifferent universe.

The Making of the World

• The physical universe is not God’s creation.
• The Course carefully distinguishes: Creation (of God) from making (of the ego). God creates. The ego makes.
• The world is a projection or manifestation of the belief in separation. “The world is false perception.”
• Space and time arise as part of this illusory system.
• Incarnation is therefore not God’s original plan but part of the dream of separation.
• The creation of the world and incarnation into it is the fallen Son’s attempt to hide from God and deny God.

The Fall Never Truly Happened

• There is no actual fall. There is only the belief that there was one.
• Reality itself remains untouched. Heaven was never altered. God’s Creation has never been damaged.
• The Son of God has never truly left his Source. “Ideas leave not their source.”
• Within the dream, the Son’s return is inevitable. In Reality, he has never departed.
• God’s answer to the separation was given at the very instant the separation seemed to occur. Immediately the corrective response was made.
• Nothing is gained from the Fall that was not already present in Heaven. Yet once the dream has been made, the Holy Spirit ensures that nothing need be wasted. Every experience of separation can be reinterpreted as a lesson in forgiveness and used to awaken the Son from the belief that he ever left his Father.

The Split Mind

• By taking separation seriously, the Son’s mind appears to split. One part identifies with the impossible wish and becomes the ego thought system. The memory of Truth remains as one’s Right Mind and the voice of the Holy Spirit.
• The mind retains the power of decision because neither voice can truly abolish its freedom.
• The entire dream unfolds from the mind’s continued choice to listen to the ego rather than the Holy Spirit.
• This split is itself illusory. Reality has not divided; only perception appears divided.

The Holy Spirit

• The Holy Spirit is God’s Answer.
• The ego is the voice for separation, the Holy Spirit is the Voice for God.
• The Holy Spirit remains in the sleeping Son’s mind and gently leads him home.
• Nothing needs to be repaired in the Reality of Heaven or in the True Mind of Man. Rather, what must be healed is the mistaken belief that we have sinned and left it.
• At no point is the sleeping Son actually abandoned, without guidance, or separated from the memory and presence of God.

The Dream

• Human life occurs literally within a dream and as a dream.
• The dream includes:
• bodies,
• personalities,
• history,
• suffering,
• conflict,
• birth and death.
• Awakening does not create Heaven. It is not a change in essence. Awakening merely remembers it already and always IS.
• Salvation is therefore remembrance rather than acquisition. It is a loss of forgetfulness.

The Great Forgetting

• The separation is simultaneously exile, sleep, enchantment, amnesia, and dream. The Son does not become something else or go somewhere else. He simply forgets what he is and dreams.
• The great tragedy of the world is therefore not wickedness but forgetfulness, amnesia
• forgetting one's royal identity. Divinity is concealed. The Prince has totally lost and forgotten his inheritance, heritage, Home and Father
• The great miracle of salvation is therefore not acquisition but remembrance.
• anamnesis: remembrance. Not gaining something new, but just letting go of forgetting. Losing loss, forgetting forgetfulness.
• Forgetting the covenant…

The Birth of Guilt

• Once the Son believes that he has separated from God, he feels deep down in the depths of his mind: I attacked God. I destroyed Heaven. I usurped my Father. I stole the power of creation. I am sinful, I’ve done something terribly wrong.
• Therefore: God must now punish me.
• The Son believes he has committed (the impossible) crime of separating from and attacking his Source. He experiences his apparent autonomy not as freedom but as stolen power.
• Because he believes he has attacked Love, he expects retaliation. Guilt becomes the hidden foundation of the ego’s world.
• The ego teaches that guilt is real, punishment is deserved, and reconciliation is impossible.

The War on God

• God is not wrathful. The Son projects his own attack and guilt onto God, then experiences God as: judge, enemy, avenger, tyrant, executioner, jealous ruler, and keeper of the forbidden gate.
• The Son does not fear God as God truly is. He fears the image of God made by his own guilt. Having imagined that he attacked the Father, he imagines a Father who will attack him in return.
• Thus begins his long war on God
• The world is made to hide from God, and also to continually play out the separation. “The world was made as an attack on God.” (ACIM workbook)
• The world’s original egoic purpose is to establish an alternative to Heaven:
• change instead of changelessness
• death instead of life
• scarcity instead of abundance
• perception instead of knowledge
• private bodies instead of shared mind
• conflict instead of extension
• causelessness instead of God as Cause.
• Thus the world is an “attack” because it seems to demonstrate: God is absent. God’s Will has failed. His Son is fallen. Death is real and inevitable.

The Great Projection

• The guilt within the split mind becomes intolerable. The ego proposes that the mind escape from guilt by casting it outside itself. What is projected appears external, independent, and objectively real.
• The inner conflict of the Son is perceived as a universe of divided objects, competing wills, opposing forces, predators and victims.
• The world is therefore the outward picture of an inward condition.
• Projection does not remove guilt; it conceals its source and makes healing appear impossible.
• Time and Space and The World are made. Time and Space become the prison within which the Son believes himself to be trapped.
• space makes separation appear measurable and real
• time places the imagined attack in an unreachable past
• past guilt and future punishment keeps fear alive
• causality seems external rather than within and mental
• death seems to prove that God’s eternal life has been overturned.
• Space gives distance to separation; time gives duration to it. Together they make the impossible appear to have happened, to continue happening, and to produce irreversible consequences.

Exile

• The fallen Son experiences all this as Exile. He believes that God has turned away from him, rather than the truth that it was the other way around.
• He finds himself expelled from the Garden of Eden with God’s terrible Angel blocking the way back with a flaming sword.
• He feels deep guilt and so projects that outward upon God
• He believes himself cursed to live and die by the sweat of his brow, to experience life as pain and suffering which ends in death.
• And even those who have the spiritual belief in reincarnation and more than one life to live, for death to not be a release, but only to lead into another nightmare going around and around on the wheel of incarnation.
• He finds himself in a dark, scary dream that is truly a nightmare.
• His mind is ill, and therefore so is his body and his world. He experiences sickness, pain, various levels of insanity, depression, ……
• He lives in The Wasteland and wanders lost and alone
• And he is doomed to wander the wasteland until he sets forth on the Quest of the Holy Grail, until he finds the grail castle and has the courage and compassion to ask the question.

The Drama of the World & Human Conflict Relationships

• The world is simultaneously: fortress, prison, veil, labyrinth, stage, battlefield, dream, place of exile.
• The world serves three linked ego purposes: Hide from God’s imagined vengeance, Hide guilt from conscious awareness, Preserve the separate identity
• The body is the boundary drawn around a fragment of mind. It gives visible form to the belief: “I am this separate self, enclosed within myself and cut off from all others.”
• The Fallen Son engages in a ceaseless drama of projection onto his brothers and sisters in this world to keep his ego satisfied and engaged. His life isa silent battle of attack and defense, guilt and condemnation, anger and fear, ……

• The restoration and return to Eden before the final ascension and translation into Heaven
• The translating of the nightmare into a happy dream which is permeable to the Kingdom of Heaven

Translation & Creation Without End

And then they remembered that they had never left home. The Kingdom stood exactly as it always had. Their inheritance had never been lost, their crowns had never been stolen, and the gates of Heaven had never been closed. What they called the end was discovered to be only another beginning. For Creation itself has no end, and the eternal adventure of Love had only just begun.

God → Creation → Sonship → Heaven → the impossible wish → the split mind → ego and Holy Spirit → guilt → fear of God → projection → fragmentation → time and space → bodies → the world → incarnation

The body was made to witness separation, but once made, it can be reinterpreted as an instrument of communication, forgiveness, and awakening. Its origin does not dictate its final use. The body’s egoic origin does not mean it must only serve the ego. The Holy Spirit can give it a different purpose: communication, forgiveness, service, healing, teaching, joining.
