The Scattering of the Light
The Scattering is the breaking of the alchemical vessel.
In alchemy, the vas—the vessel—is essential. The work must be contained. If the vessel breaks, the contents spill, and the operation fails, or at least must be started over under different conditions.
Christ was a vessel. The early apostolic community was a vessel. But the vessel broke. Not because of failure, but because the contents were too powerful, too alive, too much for any single institutional form to contain. The Light could not be held in one vessel without being domesticated, controlled, turned into property. So it broke the vessel and scattered.
This reframes the Scattering not as tragedy but as necessity. If the Light had remained only in one tradition, it would have been captured. The breaking of the vessel was the protection of the Light. Each fragment carried something real. No fragment carried everything. And the scattering ensured that no single authority could ever claim exclusive possession.
But here's the consequence: if the Scattering was necessary, then the regathering cannot simply be a return to the original vessel. You cannot put the Light back into the same bottle. You cannot but new wine into old wineskins
The regathering must be something new—a synthesis that holds the colors together without reducing them to a single hue, a vessel that is not a container but a pattern, a harmony, a living organism rather than an institution.
This is why the Royal Art cannot just be "the early Church restored" or "perennial philosophy" or "traditionalism." It has to be a new creation that honors the necessity of the Scattering. The colors and the differences are real. The regathering is not the erasure of the prism but the discovery of the white Light that shines through the prism, making the colors possible.
This also means that our methodological distinction between history, myth, symbol, and synthesis is not just scholarly hygiene. It's theologically required. If we flattened all the colors into one, we would be undoing the Scattering by force, which is exactly what the False King would do. The True King honors the differences and finds the deeper unity beneath them.
