Extracting the Quintessence

The Quintessence — the fifth spirit — arises from the decay and blending of the four elements. This is the Quintessence alone, following the preparation of the Water of Life. Spirit, Soul, and Body.

From the poison of the dragon (crude antimony), through dissolution in Virgin's Milk and distillation with oil of vitriol, by means of twelve degrees of exaltation, the philosophical tree bears the fruit of the Quinta Essentia—the universal medicine and the fifth element beyond corruption.

This is simultaneously an operational laboratory procedure (the apparatus could be built and used) and a symbolic encoding of the broader principle: from one base material, through the application of art, fire, and repeated purification, the adept extracts multiple purified essences culminating in the Aurum Potabile—the extraction of the Soul of Metals, the universal medicine that restores perfection to corrupted matter.

The Dragon (Ladanus): A large winged dragon coils in an S-shape around the base of the apparatus, its belly wrapped around the central distillation vessel. The dragon drinks from a shallow dish labeled Lac Virginis ("Virgin's Milk"). In alchemical operations, this refers to a mercurial solvent—typically distilled wine vinegar or a mercury-salt solution—that "tames" the dragon and begins purification. The dragon itself represents the prima materia: crude, poisonous, chaotic antimony ore (stibnite), the "wolf of the metals" that devours all base metals. Ladanus (ladanum) denotes the resinous, viscous humidity or raw fuel that feeds the dragon—the material substrate requiring transformation.

The Central Vessel (Antimonium): The dragon's body merges upward into a large alembic or pelican flask labeled Anthimon (Antimony). In Valentine's tradition, antimony was the universal purifier and medicina, the "Grey Wolf" used to purge gold and the foundation material for the quintessence. This vessel sits atop or contains the heating principle marked Calciū Virtutū (calcined virtue/power)—the purified mineral salts or fixed principles that have been burned to ash and prepared as the base for volatile extraction.

The Philosophical Tree: From the alembic's neck rises a serpentine tube that transforms into a literal tree—the arbor philosophica. This tree bears twelve pear-shaped glass retorts or cucurbits as fruit, each sealed and numbered 1 through 12. These represent the twelve degrees or "gates" of purification: twelve repeated distillation and cohobation cycles corresponding to the zodiacal/planetary influences and the stages of increasing purity. At the apex sits a thirteenth retort, larger and unnumbered, crowned with a small fleur-de-lis stopper. This is the completed quinta essentia itself—the pure, celestial extract now beyond the realm of the four elements and the twelve zodiacal stages.

The Flying Dragonlings: Around the tree fly numerous small winged dragons with long necks and tails. Each carries or attacks one of the retorts. These signify volatilization: the volatile spirits rising and being captured repeatedly as the heavy metals are "spiritualized" and forced to leave the body through the dragon's fire. The arrows piercing the flasks emphasize the penetrating, directive force of fire and the ascending volatile nature of the work.

The Fountain (Right Foreground): A three-tiered fountain with water flowing from basin to basin. The middle basin is inscribed Oleum Vitrioli ("Oil of Vitriol"—sulfuric acid, one of the main starting solvents in the work). The fountain as a whole is labeled Aqua Potabilis ("drinkable water"—the perfected solvent or elixir). Some versions show this as Aurum Potabile (potable/drinkable gold), the ultimate goal: the Red Elixir or universal medicine in liquid form. This fountain represents both the practical side-product and the final harvest—medicine that heals all corruption.

The Candle and Book: To the right stands a lit candle on a tiered stand marked with a fleur-de-lis, representing the controlled philosophical fire necessary for regulated work. Below it rests a book, indicating that study and fire together reveal the quintessence—this is textual knowledge embodied in matter.

Alchemical Process and Meaning

The Operation: This emblem illustrates a pictorial recipe for preparing the quinta essentia using regulated antimony as base matter:

1. Antimonium (the dragon): Crude antimony ore/stibnite—the poisonous, fiery prima materia
2. Lac Virginis (the dragon drinking): The first solvent, a pure mercurial water that tames the wolf
3. The twelve numbered retorts: Twelve degrees of exaltation through repeated distillation and circulation. Each cycle captures and refines the volatile spirit.
4. The central tree: The living philosophical tree growing from regulated antimony, bearing twelve fruits of increasing potency
5. The thirteenth retort: The perfected quintessence, the celestial medicine beyond elemental corruption
6. Aqua Potabilis + Oleum Vitrioli: The medicinal drinkable water and strong acid used throughout the process

Symbolic Structure:

• Dragon = fixed, heavy, impure principle (body, lead, crude antimony, prima materia, the corrosive solvent fire)
• Tree and flasks = multiplication and elevation of essence through distillation, the spiritualization of metals
• Serpentine tube = circulation (solve et coagula), the repeated rising and descending of vapors
• Flying dragonlings = volatilization, the spirit leaving the heavy body
• Fountain = condensation and harvest, the distilled vapors raining down into perfected medicine
• Candle = controlled heat, the regulated fire of art
• Aurum/Aqua Potabile = the goal, a living, drinkable tincture or Red Elixir
