The Islamic and Arabic-speaking world was one of the great preservers, translators, developers, and transmitters of the inherited sciences of antiquity. Between late antiquity and the medieval period, Greek philosophical, scientific, astrological, medical, and Hermetic materials were translated into Syriac and Arabic, studied in the Islamic world, expanded by Arabic-speaking scholars, and later rendered into Latin for readers in medieval Europe.
This was not simply preservation. The Arabic world became a living laboratory of philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, astrology, alchemy, optics, and esoteric science. Greek materials were reinterpreted alongside Persian, Indian, Jewish, Christian, and Islamic intellectual traditions. When Latin Europe received these texts, it received not only Aristotle and older Greek learning, but centuries of Arabic commentary, method, terminology, and discovery.
The Translation of Knowledge
The broad movement may be pictured as: Greek and Hellenistic learning → Syriac and Arabic translation → Islamic philosophy and sacred science → Arabic-to-Latin translation → medieval and Renaissance Europe.
From the eleventh through thirteenth centuries, translators working especially in Iberia and Sicily brought a vast Arabic-language corpus into Latin. This transmission helped renew European philosophy, medicine, astronomy, mathematics, and natural philosophy, preparing the intellectual ground of scholasticism, Renaissance humanism, Hermeticism, and the later scientific tradition.
Important figures include: al-Kindi — philosopher, astrologer, and writer on occult properties and celestial influence. Avicenna — philosopher and physician whose metaphysics and medical works shaped medieval Latin thought. Averroes — major commentator on Aristotle, whose work became central to medieval European philosophical debate. Jābirian and later alchemical traditions — laboratories of alchemical theory, materials, apparatus, and operations. Arabic astronomers and astrologers — transmitters and developers of planetary calculation, astronomical tables, instruments, and celestial interpretation.
Alchemy, Astrology, and Hermetic Science
Alchemy and astrology did not travel in a single direction from Greece to Europe. They were braided traditions, continually translated and transformed.
Greco-Egyptian alchemy → Syriac and Arabic alchemy → Latin medieval alchemy → Renaissance and Paracelsian alchemy.
Arabic alchemical writings preserved and developed practical and theoretical materials concerned with distillation, mineral substances, medicines, elixirs, furnaces, and the transformation of matter. The Latin West received both technical vocabulary and a renewed body of alchemical learning. By the Renaissance, these materials could be joined to Christian theology, Hermetic philosophy, and the inward symbolism of the Great Work.
The same is true of astrology. Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek, Persian, Indian, and Arabic astronomical traditions all contribute to the medieval celestial arts. Arabic-speaking scholars preserved and refined astronomical tables, star lore, mathematical methods, and astrological texts. Their work was essential to the revival of astrology in medieval Europe and to the astrological worldview of Renaissance magi.
Hermetic and magical knowledge also traveled through this world. Arabic Hermetica, talismanic magic, astral correspondences, angelic and planetary lore, and works such as the Picatrix — the Latin form of the Arabic Ghāyat al-Ḥakīm — became major resources for medieval and Renaissance magic. The Western grimoire tradition, planetary magic, and Renaissance natural magic all bear the marks of this transmission.
Sufism and the Imaginal
The Islamic world also carries an interior mystical stream: Sufism. Its traditions of remembrance, divine love, symbolic interpretation, visionary journey, and union with God belong to the wider medieval world of contemplative religion.
Figures such as Suhrawardi and Ibn Arabi are especially important to the Royal Art’s interest in light, angelic worlds, symbolism, and the mundus imaginalis. Their influence on Latin Christian thought was not always direct, but their work shows that medieval Islamic civilization was not only a bridge for ancient learning. It was an independent flowering of metaphysical, mystical, and imaginal thought.
The Return to the Latin West
When Arabic learning entered medieval Europe, it helped make possible a new Western synthesis. Aristotle entered the universities with Arabic commentators. Astronomy and astrology gained new instruments, tables, and computational power. Alchemy gained texts, procedures, materials, and an international language of experiment. Hermetic and magical traditions gained access to Arabic astrological and talismanic lore.
The Renaissance Magus stands downstream from this transmission. Ficino, Pico, Agrippa, Paracelsus, Dee, and later Rosicrucian and ceremonial traditions inherit a West already changed by its encounter with Arabic philosophy and sacred science.
The Arabic-Islamic transmission is therefore one of the great hidden bridges of the Western Mystery Tradition: a river carrying ancient Greek, Egyptian, Persian, and Near Eastern knowledge through the medieval Islamic world and returning it, transformed, to Latin Christendom. Without that bridge, medieval and Renaissance Hermeticism, astrology, alchemy, natural magic, and philosophy would be unimaginable in the forms they came to take.
