The Seven Bowls of Wrath

The Seven Bowls of God's Wrath

"And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth."
β€” Revelation 16:1

The Seven Bowls (or Vials) are the third and final cycle of sevenfold judgment in Revelation, completing the pattern begun by the Seals and Trumpets. They represent the total and complete purification β€” there is nothing held back, no "third part" as with the Trumpets, but the entirety of illusion is dissolved.

The Seven Bowls

First Bowl: Grievous Sores Upon Those with the Mark of the Beast

(Rev 16:2) β€” The body itself rebels against its allegiance to the false self. Those who bear the mark of the Beast β€” who have identified completely with the ego β€” experience the consequences of that identification.

Second Bowl: The Sea Becomes as the Blood of a Dead Man

(Rev 16:3) β€” The emotional realm is completely purified. Unlike the Trumpet which affected a third, here the entire sea is transformed. Every living thing in the sea dies β€” all life that depends on the old emotional patterns ceases.

Third Bowl: The Rivers and Fountains Become Blood

(Rev 16:4-7) β€” The mental sources β€” rivers of thought, fountains of belief β€” are turned to blood. The angel declares: "Thou art righteous, O Lord… for they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink."

Fourth Bowl: The Sun Scorches with Great Heat

(Rev 16:8-9) β€” Where the Fourth Trumpet darkened the sun, the Fourth Bowl intensifies it. The spiritual light that was dimmed now blazes with unbearable intensity β€” too bright for those who cling to darkness. This is the Citrinitas pushed to its extreme.

Fifth Bowl: Darkness Upon the Throne of the Beast

(Rev 16:10-11) β€” The seat of the Beast's power is plunged into darkness. The ego-self, the false king on the false throne, is overthrown. The kingdom of illusion collapses from within.

Sixth Bowl: The Euphrates Dries Up

(Rev 16:12-16) β€” The great river that forms the boundary of the old world dries up, "that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared." The barrier between worlds dissolves. The forces gather at Armageddon for the final confrontation.

Three unclean spirits like frogs emerge from the mouths of the Dragon, the Beast, and the False Prophet β€” the last desperate deceptions of the dying ego.

Seventh Bowl: "It Is Done"

(Rev 16:17-21) β€” "And there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done."

The greatest earthquake in history. Babylon the Great falls. The islands flee. The mountains are not found. Hailstones the weight of a talent fall from heaven.

"It is done" β€” consummatum est β€” echoes Christ's final words on the Cross: "It is finished." The Crucifixion of the world-illusion is complete.

The Alchemical Reading

The three cycles of seven (Seals β†’ Trumpets β†’ Bowls) correspond to the three great alchemical stages applied to the macrocosm:

  • Seals = Nigredo of the World β€” the recognition and confrontation
  • Trumpets = Albedo of the World β€” the active purification
  • Bowls = Rubedo of the World β€” the final consummation

What follows the Seventh Bowl is the fall of Babylon and the revelation of the New Jerusalem β€” the Auredo, the golden world that was always present beneath the illusion.
