The Seven Trumpets

The Seven Trumpets of Revelation

"And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets."
— Revelation 8:2

The Seven Trumpets form the second cycle of divine judgment in the Book of Revelation, following the Seven Seals and preceding the Seven Bowls. They represent a progressive intensification of the apocalyptic process — the dismantling of the world of illusion.

The Seven Trumpets

First Trumpet: Hail and Fire Mixed with Blood

"And the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up." (Rev 8:7)

The earth is struck — the material foundation of the world begins to dissolve. Esoterically: the attachments to physical reality, the body, and the senses begin to be purified by fire.

Second Trumpet: A Great Mountain Burning with Fire Cast into the Sea

"And the third part of the sea became blood." (Rev 8:8-9)

The sea — the emotional/astral realm — is disrupted. The "mountain" cast into the sea represents a great power or kingdom that falls into chaos. Esoterically: the emotional body is purified; old patterns of desire and attachment are dissolved.

Third Trumpet: The Star Called Wormwood

"And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood." (Rev 8:10-11)

The fresh waters — sources of life and sustenance — become bitter. Esoterically: the mental body, the sources of thought and belief, are purified. What once nourished the ego now tastes of death.

Fourth Trumpet: A Third of the Sun, Moon, and Stars Darkened

"And the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars." (Rev 8:12)

The celestial lights dim — the guiding lights of the old consciousness begin to fail. Esoterically: the spiritual faculties themselves are tested. The "dark night" descends.

Fifth Trumpet (First Woe): The Locusts from the Abyss

"And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit." (Rev 9:1-11)

The Abyss opens. Locusts with the power of scorpions emerge, tormenting those without the seal of God. Their king is Abaddon/Apollyon — the Destroyer. Esoterically: the unconscious mind opens, releasing repressed shadow material. This is the confrontation with the Dweller on the Threshold.

Sixth Trumpet (Second Woe): The Four Angels of the Euphrates

"Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates." (Rev 9:13-21)

Four angels of destruction are released, commanding an army of 200 million. Esoterically: the four elements are unbound — the entire structure of manifest reality is shaken loose. The Euphrates, the boundary of the promised land, represents the threshold between the known and the unknown.

Seventh Trumpet (Third Woe): The Kingdom of God

"The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever." (Rev 11:15)

The final trumpet does not bring destruction but proclamation — the announcement that the transformation is complete. The temple of God is opened in heaven. Esoterically: the crown chakra opens, the Kether is revealed, and the sovereignty of the divine Self is established.

The Sevenfold Pattern

The Trumpets mirror the Seven Seals and anticipate the Seven Bowls — three sevenfold cycles of increasing intensity:

  • Seals: The recognition of what must be dissolved
  • Trumpets: The active dissolution — the sounding of the call
  • Bowls: The final pouring out — complete and total purification

Together they represent the alchemical process writ large across the cosmos — Nigredo, Albedo, Rubedo applied to the totality of creation.

The number seven connects to:

  • The Seven Days of Creation (Book I)
  • The Seven Classical Planets (Book VII)
  • The Seven Sephiroth below the Abyss (Book I)
  • The Seven Alchemical Operations (Book VII)
  • The Seven Churches addressed in Revelation's opening chapters
