Mutus liber

The third plate depicts Neptune’s realm, where fishermen, sea creatures, birds, and Jupiter above all symbolize that the operator must employ every faculty and skill to “capture the mystical golden fish,” the central emblem of the Work. Its allegorical elements eagles, the basket-lantern, the boats, and the fishing gear represent stages of the sublimation of Mercury and the preparation of the luminous vessel required for the mystical union of Sun and Moon.
