"Tarot's Ark of the Covenant" - Lon Milo Duquette
The Cube of Space is the three-dimensional map of creation encoded in the Sefer Yetzirah — the oldest and most compressed of all Kabbalistic texts. Where the The 10 Sephirot arranges the ten Sephiroth in a vertical glyph of emanation, the Cube arranges the The Hebrew Letters: 3-7-12 in a spatial glyph of formation. It is the architecture of Yetzirah — the World of Formation itself rendered as a geometric solid.
"Artful nature has given to the most animal the same six limits as the cube has, most perfectly marked. Man himself is, as it were, cube." - Mysterium Cosmographicum, Kepler
A cube has three axes, six faces, and twelve edges. The Hebrew alphabet has three Mother Letters, seven Double Letters, and twelve Simple Letters. The Sefer Yetzirah maps each group of letters to the corresponding geometric feature:
- Three Mother Letters → the three axes (the coordinates of space)
- Seven Double Letters → the six faces and the center (the planetary governors)
- Twelve Simple Letters → the twelve edges (the zodiacal signs)
The entire creative Word of God — the full alphabet of formation — is distributed across a single solid. The Cube is both temple and cosmos: the blueprint of the manifested world and the body of the Divine Name spoken into space.
The Three Axes — The Mother Letters
The three Mother Letters are the primordial elements from which all else proceeds. They are the axes of the Cube — the three coordinates that define space itself.
Aleph (א) — Air — the East-West Axis
The axis of depth. East is forward, where the Sun rises; West is backward, where it sets. Aleph is the breath of God, the mediating element, silence before the Word. In the Tria Prima, it is Mercury — the volatile spirit that moves between Fire and Water.
Mem (מ) — Water — the Vertical Axis
The axis of height — Above and Below. Mem is the great maternal waters, the receptive matrix. The heavenly waters above and the terrestrial waters below. In the Tria Prima, it is Salt — the body, the crystallizing principle.
Shin (ש) — Fire — the North-South Axis
The axis of breadth. North is left; South is right. Shin is the consuming fire of the divine will, the three-tongued flame. In the Tria Prima, it is Sulphur — the soul, the combustible principle.
Together, these three letters form the word אמש — Emesh — the primordial substance from which the Creator shaped the world. They are the Father (Fire), the Mother (Water), and the Holy Breath (Air) — the elemental trinity that precedes all manifestation.
"Three Mothers: Aleph, Mem, Shin — a great, mystical, hidden secret, sealed with six rings. And from them emanated Air, Water, and Fire, and from them were born Fathers, and from the Fathers, descendants."
- Sefer Yetzirah, 3:2

The Six Faces and the Holy Center — The Double Letters
The seven Double Letters are so called because each has two pronunciations — a hard and a soft — reflecting the fundamental duality of existence: life and death, peace and war, wisdom and folly, wealth and poverty, grace and ugliness, fertility and desolation, sovereignty and servitude. They govern the seven ancient planets, the seven days of the week, and the seven gates of the soul (two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, and the mouth).
On the Cube, six of the Double Letters are assigned to the six faces — the six directions of space — while the seventh, Kaf, holds the center.
Direction | Letter | Planet | Quality |
Above | Bet (ב) | Saturn | Structure, boundary, cosmic order |
Below | Tav (ת) | Moon | Cycles, receptivity, manifestation |
East (Forward) | Gimel (ג) | Jupiter | Expansion, wisdom, emanation |
West (Backward) | Resh (ר) | Mercury | Reflection, intellect, mediation |
North (Left) | Dalet (ד) | Mars | Force, limitation, testing |
South (Right) | Pey (פ) | Venus | Harmony, attraction, beauty |
Center | Kaf (כ) | Sun | Unity, radiance, divine coherence |
The center is the Sun — the heart of the Cube, the point from which all directions emanate and to which all return. Kaf (כ), the open palm, the vessel that holds and receives. Every planetary force radiates outward from the solar center and is bounded by the six faces. Saturn crowns from above; the Moon grounds from below. Jupiter opens the way forward; Mercury reflects from behind. Mars tests from the left; Venus draws from the right. And the Sun reigns in the Holy of Holies — the center of the center.

The Sealing of the Six Directions
The Sefer Yetzirah teaches that God sealed the six directions of space with the six permutations of the three-letter root YHV — the first three letters of the Tetragammaton יהוה - The Fourfold Name of Deity:
Direction | Permutation | Hebrew |
Above | YHV | י ה ו |
Below | VHY | ו ה י |
East (Forward) | YVH | י ו ה |
West (Backward) | HVY | ה ו י |
North (Left) | HYV | ה י ו |
South (Right) | VYH | ו י ה |
"He sealed Above and faced upward and sealed it with YHV. He sealed Below and faced downward and sealed it with YVH. He sealed East and faced forward and sealed it with HYV. He sealed West and faced backward and sealed it with HVY. He sealed South and faced right and sealed it with VYH. He sealed North and faced left and sealed it with VHY." - Sefer Yetzirah, 1:13
The Name of God is the architecture of space itself. The six permutations seal the six faces of the Cube like the six sides of the Ark of the Covenant. The fullness of the Tetragrammaton — YHVH — radiates from the center, where the Sun dwells. The Cube is, in this sense, an Ark: a vessel containing the living Name, sealed by divine authority.

The Twelve Edges — The Simple Letters
The twelve Simple Letters govern the twelve signs of the zodiac, the twelve months of the year, and twelve fundamental faculties of the soul. They are placed upon the twelve edges of the Cube, forming a zodiacal framework around the planetary core.
Letter | Sign | Edge | Faculty | Layer |
Hey (ה) | Aries | Upper East | Sight | Cardinal |
Vav (ו) | Taurus | Northeast | Hearing | Fixed |
Zayin (ז) | Gemini | Lower East | Smell | Mutable |
Chet (ח) | Cancer | Upper North | Speech | Cardinal |
Tet (ט) | Leo | Northwest | Taste | Fixed |
Yod (י) | Virgo | Lower North | Coition | Mutable |
Lamed (ל) | Libra | Upper West | Action | Cardinal |
Nun (נ) | Scorpio | Southwest | Motion | Fixed |
Samekh (ס) | Sagittarius | Lower West | Anger | Mutable |
Ayin (ע) | Capricorn | Upper South | Laughter | Cardinal |
Tzadi (צ) | Aquarius | Southeast | Imagination | Fixed |
Qof (ק) | Pisces | Lower South | Sleep | Mutable |
The twelve edges form three horizontal layers around the Cube, corresponding to the three astrological modalities:
Top — Cardinal Layer (the four upper edges)
Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. The initiating signs. They touch the face of Saturn above — the boundary of structure and cosmic order. The edges of inception.
Middle — Fixed Layer (the four middle edges)
Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. The stabilizing signs — the four Cherubim of Ezekiel's vision, the four fixed stars (Aldebaran, Regulus, Antares, Fomalhaut). They surround the solar center, the heart of the Cube. The edges of endurance.
Bottom — Mutable Layer (the four lower edges)
Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces. The adapting signs. They touch the face of the Moon below — the realm of cycles, flux, and manifestation. The edges of transformation.
The vertical progression — Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable — mirrors the natural cycle of initiation, stabilization, and adaptation. The zodiac wraps around the Cube like a garment of stars.
The Cube of Genesis — The Tetragrammaton in Space
The Cube is not only a map of space — it is the body of the Name.
When the three axes are read through the lens of the Tetragrammaton, a deeper pattern emerges. The Sefer Yetzirah's assignment of the Mother Letters to the axes, combined with the sealing of the directions by the permutations of YHV, reveals the Cube as a three-dimensional expression of the Fourfold Name of God:
The Fire Axis (North–South) — Yod (י) + Shin (ש) — The Father
Yod is the initial spark of divine will, the paternal seed. Shin is fire, the consuming flame. Together they form the horizontal axis of initiation — the solstice axis. South is the right hand of warmth and creation; North is the left hand of testing and restraint. This is the axis of the Father — Heaven, the originating fire.
The Water Axis (Above–Below) — Heh (ה) + Mem (מ) — The Mother
The first Heh of the Tetragrammaton is the great Mother, the receptive womb. Mem is the primordial water. Above, the celestial waters — Heh and Mem together form the heavenly matrix. Below, the final Heh and final Mem (ם) — the terrestrial bride, the grounding of form into matter. This is the axis of the Mother — the vertical column from the waters above to the earth below.
The Air Axis (East–West) — Vav (ו) + Aleph (א) — The Son
Vav is the nail, the connecting principle, the Son who mediates between Father and Mother. Aleph is the silent breath, the spirit of Air. Together they form the axis of depth — the equinox axis, the path of the Sun from its rising in the East to its setting in the West. This is the axis of the Son — the solar heir, the conscious breath that moves between origin and return.
The Center — YHVH — The Sun — Kaf (כ)
At the intersection of all three axes stands the complete Tetragrammaton: YHVH — Father, Mother, Son, and Daughter united. The Sun reigns here as Kaf (כ), the open hand of God, the radiant heart from which all six directions are measured and to which all twelve signs return.
The Cube of Genesis reveals the divine family inscribed in the very structure of space. The Father initiates along the horizontal; the Mother receives and grounds along the vertical; the Son mediates and illuminates along the axis of depth. And at the center, the fullness of the Name radiates as living light — the King seated on the Throne at the heart of creation.
The Unfolded Cube — The Rose Cross
When the Cube of Space is unfolded — its six faces laid flat — it forms a cross. This is the geometric basis of the The Unfolded Cube of Space: Rose Cross of the Golden Dawn, upon which the twenty-two Hebrew letters, the planetary symbols, the zodiacal signs, and the elemental colors are inscribed. The Rose at the center of the Cross bears the twenty-two petals of the Hebrew alphabet — the same twenty-two letters that, when folded back into three dimensions, reconstitute the Cube.
The Cross is the Cube opened. The Cube is the Cross sealed.
This is why the Sefer Yetzirah calls the Cube a "sealed" structure — sealed by the six permutations of the Name. And it is why the Rose Cross is called by Lon Milo Duquette the "Table of Contents of the Tarot" — because it contains, in two dimensions, the same complete system that the Cube contains in three.

Within the Royal Art
The Cube of Space is one of the foundational geometric models of the Royal Art — a three-dimensional expression of the same truths the Tree of Life maps vertically and the zodiacal wheel maps circularly. Where the Tree reveals the descent and ascent of divine emanation through the ten Sephiroth, the Cube reveals the spatial architecture of the World of Formation — Yetzirah — the world built by letters, shaped by breath, sealed by the Name.
The Cube is a Temple — the geometric blueprint of sacred space. Its center is the Holy of Holies, where the Sun reigns as the Shekinah dwells between the Cherubim. Its six faces are the six walls of the sanctuary. Its twelve edges are the twelve tribes encamped around the Tabernacle, the twelve signs through which the soul journeys, the twelve gates of the New Jerusalem. Its three axes are the three pillars — Mercy, Severity, and the Middle Way — rendered as spatial coordinates rather than vertical lines.
The Cube is also an Ark. Sealed on all six sides by the permutations of the Divine Name, it contains the living Word — as the Ark of the Covenant bore the Tablets of the Law, the Rod of Aaron, and the Manna from Heaven. Both are vessels of the Name. Both are sealed by divine authority. Both house the Presence.
And the Cube is the Stone — the Perfect Ashlar, the cubic stone of the Freemasons, hewn from the rough and shaped into perfection. Every face sealed, every edge measured, every axis true. The Cube of Space is the template for that perfection: the human being as living temple, as spatial embodiment of the Word of God.
